Republican National Convention speaker list leaks, and it’s a who’s who of lackeys and losers

So much for the notion that Donald Trump’s reality television star status was somehow going to deliver major starpower to the 2016 Republican National Convention. After weeks of trying to get the likes of Tom Brady and Mike Tyson to speak at the convention, Trump and the GOP have instead settled for a list that reads like a who’s who of lackeys and losers. Parsing the list which leaked tonight, it’s difficult to even know where to start.

There are a total of six different convention speeches by various members of the Trump family, not a surprise considering how much he’s tried to make his nomination all about him, and how difficult of a time he’s had in trying to get anyone else to fill the four days worth of speaking slots. Failed NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, who is perhaps best known for attempting to inject his extremist religious beliefs into the sport, will be speaking in an attempt at courting evangelical voters. So will professional golfer Natalie Gulbis, who is left over from Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice days; apparently Omarosa wasn’t available.

As far as politicians, Donald Trump has predictably had a difficult time convincing most of the current Republican office holders to risk their reputations by speaking at his convention. The entire Bush family is missing, as are John McCain and Mitt Romney and Bob Dole, meaning that no living Republican nominee for President will be speaking, though Dole will apparently be in the audience. Instead the best Trump has been able to lure to Cleveland is the likes of Florida Governor Rick Scott, a national laughingstock, along with tea party Senators like Tom Cotton and Joni Ernst – the latter of whom already publicly turned down the running mate role.

Interestingly, several key members of the Donald Trump campaign bandwagon are missing from the list. Newt Gingrich and Michael Flynn are listed as having early speaking slots, suggesting they’re already out of the running for Trump’s running mate. But the names Chris Christie, Ben Carson, Mike Pence, and Sarah Palin are all missing from the list. That suggests that one of them is the running mate, and the others are for some reason not speaking. The only one of Trump’s Republican primary opponents listed on the schedule is Ted Cruz, whose addition is odd considering that numerous delegates will be spending the convention trying to figure out how to forcibly take the nomination away from Trump and give it to Cruz instead. Considering how stunningly uncompelling and devoid of relevant names the convention’s speaking roster is, a potential floor fight may be the only reason for gawkers to tune in. The full list of speakers is here.

Unusual Speaker Roster At RNC Includes Melania Trump, Pro Golfer, Ex-Model

-snip-

Though many Republican rank-and-file members have bowed out of this year’s convention, a selection who have allied themselves with or defended Trump will be present. Those who will speak include six senators, seven House representatives, and a handful of Republican governors including Oklahoma’s Marry Fallin, Wisconsin’s Scott Walker, and Florida’s Rick Scott. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) are all scheduled to address the convention.

The Trump campaign has for months promised to offer voters a convention befitting a former reality TV star, with Trump’s daughter Ivanka promising that the Cleveland summit will be “unlike any we’ve ever seen.”

Details included in a New York Times write-up of the convention schedule suggest these predictions will be accurate. The first night of the convention will be devoted to the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya, and the Times reported that an entire presentation will be dedicated to detailing the sexual dalliances of former President Bill Clinton.

The third night will feature remarks from Trump’s vice presidential pick, who the real estate mogul said will be announced this Friday.

Christie and Carson are listed as speakers. So is Newt Gingrich. One name not mentioned is Mike Pence which leads one to think he is the VP choice. I find it interesting that Pence under performed Romney is his own very red state in 2012.

Jul 2016
Tim Tebow, the Heisman Trophy winner, reality television star and former N.F.L. player who was supposed to be one of the biggest names to appear at the Republican National Convention, said Thursday that he would not speak after all.

In a video he posted to Instagram, Mr. Tebow called reports that he would be a speaker “a rumor.”

“It’s amazing how fast rumors fly,” he said. “And that’s exactly what it is. A rumor.”
