Donald Trump polling stronger with evangelicals than Mitt Romney four years ago

Source: MSN/LA Times

Donald Trump does not speak often about his Christian faith, but it’s not a problem for many evangelical voters.

A new poll released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center shows that 78 percent of white evangelical voters would vote for Trump if the election were held today. That’s higher than the 73 percent of evangelicals who voiced support for Mitt Romney, an active member of the Mormon Church, at the same point in the 2012 presidential race.

The survey, which queried 2,245 voters and was conducted June 15-26, found about a third of white evangelical respondents said they strongly support Trump’s campaign. By contrast, about a one-quarter of evangelicals said they “strongly” supported Romney at this point four years ago.

Evangelicals are a key voting bloc for Republicans. White evangelical Protestants make up one-fifth of all registered voters in the U.S. and, according to Pew, one-third of all voters who say they identify with or lean Republican.

I think this goes to show that evangelical Christians is just code for racists who go to church. As recently noted in a Samantha Bee episode, the rise of the Christian right was not due to abortion, but because the federal government cracked down on Christian Universities that continued to segregate. This is why the more racist Trump acts, the more support he gets among racists who happen to go to church.

http://www.motherjones.com/media/2016/05/samantha-bee-explains-how-right-became-so-obsessively-religious

In the words of Samantha Bee, former GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz "was grown in a vat to be the perfect evangelical candidate." So how did he lose evangelical support to a loud-mouthed New York billionaire? On Monday night's episode of Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, the host joked, "Most evangelicals said, 'Nah, we're going to go with the thrice-married, foul-mouthed tit judge who likes Planned Parenthood and thinks Corinthians is a type of car upholstery.'"

Bee then unpacked the surprisingly brief but society- and politics-changing relationship between the Republican Party and the evangelical community, from its very beginnings to the elections today. It started in the early 1970s when Paul Weyrich, a co-founder of the Heritage Foundation whom Bee describes as a "Dwight Schrute understudy," realized he could tap America's churches for "potential Republicans" and found the perfect vehicle in a prominent court case.

"It wasn't abortion that birthed the religious right," she said. "It was good old white nativism and anti-government anger when the IRS challenged evangelicals' God-given right to go to school without black people."

They hate Mormons and also Catholics. You must believe in their idea of the real Jesus story. The belief in the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith and the Catholic emphasis on mother Mary disqualifies them from being real Christians.

by the way, we should amend the "evangelical christians" to reichwing evangelical xians. As my dear friend Betty (now deceased du member) used to say, "I am the thing they fear. a LEFT-WING evangelical christian" (and so was most of the congregation of her church)

"A new poll released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center shows that 78 percent of white evangelical voters would vote for Trump if the election were held today."

One has to wonder how many would vote for Trump if the election were held in November? That's when this election will be.

Why don't they simply ask "will you vote for Trump in November?" ?

So long as the Liberals have been smote, and they are finally respected (like Fredo...) as the favored protectors of their mean-spirited, slacker God, who cares if the world spirals into chaos?

And the mindset it keeps people in. I was brought up in this atmosphere. They are in a state of perpetual vulnerability to whatever messaging anyone with enough charisma, with enough salesmanship ability to manipulate. This is because they have already submitted to the ultimate leap of faith...a giant bearded old man/god in the clouds. They are preconditioned.

All a politician has to do, ie..GW Bush, is pretend to be a Christian, bow his head once in awhile and pretend to pray etc..Because they are desperate for acceptance and validation. Even though they are supposed to reject "the world" and whatever it thinks of them. They can't even see the sin of pride in those actions so blinded by the idea that having a President in office that says he is on their side, on Gods side, is another drop of 'proof' of God's existence and hand leading the nation. It makes no difference if the candidate is "flawed". Because God would never, ever, allow someone to pull the wool over their eyes with a charlatan. Or even if he was a charlatan, their must be some perfect reason in God's great plan for him. "All things work together to those who love God."

Christianity, like all organized religion, is a sick mind-numbing cult that robs millions of people of their greater potentials. They actually celebrate the idea of becoming like sheep. They are the perfect empty vessels for some asshole like Bush or Trump to dominate them.
