FBI director says Clinton did not lie, break law in email handling

Source: Reuters

FBI Director James Comey told lawmakers on Thursday that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton did not lie to the FBI about her handling of emails as secretary of state and did not break the law.

Comey told a Republican-led oversight panel in the U.S. House of Representatives that no reasonable prosecutor would charge Clinton with a crime over her use of private email servers while she was secretary of state, some of which were used to transmit classified information.

he's straight-forward, an attorney, and many don't understand his role, including, apparently, the reuters-writer.

Earlier during the hearing, he held up some documents that showed this big, glaring, red block of header at the top of the page, as how a page would look that had been labeled classified. Then he described this little &quot c)" configuration that might be buried down in the text of some email, denoting that THAT particular little bit would be classified.

Congressman Elijah Cummings repeated this later on. I would imagine that it might be easy to overlook one of those little &quot c)" notations down in the middle of some line or paragraph. Especially if there was no big red block at the top of the email cautioning of sensitivity of contents.

You could SEE that big red block of prominently bordered text that blared like a marching band's brass section from the top several inches of a document that I think it was Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania who held it up. And from the back of the room you could see this big red header at the top of the page, taking up what looked like the top three or four inches. GLARINGLY obvious Classified Alert stuff. Now, compare that to &quot c)". I'm looking at what I just typed, and that &quot c)" looks pretty doggone teensy on my laptop screen. I can fully see and understand how that itty bitty "mark" buried in some paragraph or sentence midway down an email message could be missed.

Hell, I used to have to edit scripts for broadcast and while I'm pretty anal-compulsive about stuff like that, I STILL missed a detail or two or eight or nine, every now and then. I could STILL be certain that I'd gone over everything - and if one turned up that I hadn't spotted and I was testifying under oath that I believed it wasn't there, well, I guess you could say I was a liar about that, too. Particularly if I might have had some VIP waiting to meet with me in my office, an assistant or two bringing in phone messages to return right away or something for me to sign, a dispatch and bio from the brand new ambassador to "Becky-Becky-Becky-Stan-Stan or some such place, and I had a plane to catch for Geneva or Bahrain in an hour, PLUS my daughter getting married - well, I can see how she'd miss things she believed she hadn't missed. And btw, I, too, happen to have a daughter who just got married a month ago, so I TOTALLY get that part of it!!!

Hearing Backfires On GOP As FBI Director Says Clinton Email Could Be Judged Not Classified
By Jason Easley on Thu, Jul 7th, 2016 at 1:40 pm

The House Republican ploy to drag FBI Director James Comey in to testify about his decision not to recommend charges against Hillary Clinton has completely backfired. FBI Director Comey destroyed one of the key points of the GOP conspiracy when he said that some of Clinton's emails that were deemed classified could be judged not classified.

The House Republican ploy to drag FBI Director James Comey in to testify about his decision not to recommend charges against Hillary Clinton has completely backfired. FBI Director Comey destroyed one of the key points of the GOP conspiracy when he said that some of Clinton’s emails that were deemed classified could be judged not classified.

Transcript of the exchange between Comey and Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA):

MATT CARTWRIGHT: You were asked about markings on a few documents, I have the manual here, marking national classified security information. And I don’t think you were given a full chance to talk about those three documents with the little c’s on them. Were they properly documented? Were they properly marked according to the manual?

JAMES COMEY: No.

<SNIP>

MATT CARTWRIGHT: So if Secretary Clinton really were an expert about what’s classified and what’s not classified and we’re following the manual, the absence of a header would tell her immediately that those three documents were not classified. Am I correct in that?

JAMES COMEY: That would be a reasonable inference.

By then the FBI had found no crime based on what she actually did. She just had to tell the truth at the interview--lying to the FBI is a crime-- and she would pass with flying colors. And she did.

Hey, look at it this way:

When Chuck Todd opens his MTP Daily show by wondering aloud whether the Comey hearing had actually helped Hillary, and that the CONS had once again overreached, you've gotta figure it was a good day for Hillary. Because he's no friend to Hillary, OR to Democrats in general. I couldn't believe that one when I heard it, but by Jove, there it was!
