Hillary Clinton's campaign is blasting Donald Trump's praise for Saddam Hussein
........................
Speaking in North Carolina Tuesday evening, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee acknowledged that Hussein was a "really bad guy," but reiterated praise for Hussein, who was toppled and later executed following the American invasion of Iraq in 2003.
........................
"Donald Trump's praise for brutal strongmen seemingly knows no bounds," Sullivan said.
He added: "Trump yet again lauded Saddam Hussein as a great killer of terrorists, noting with approval that he never bothered to read anyone their rights. In reality, Hussein's regime was a sponsor of terrorism one that paid families of suicide bombers who attacked Israelis, among other crimes. Trump's cavalier compliments for brutal dictators, and the twisted lessons he seems to have learned from their history, again demonstrate how dangerous he would be as Commander-in-Chief and how unworthy he is of the office he seeks."
Hussein has rarely found many sympathizers in American political circles.
In an interview with Fox News host Megyn Kelly on Tuesday evening, House Speaker Paul Ryan attempted to distance himself from Trump's comments about Hussein. .................

Paul Ryan endorsed the bigot Trump--now he has tried to distance himself from Trump. But the vile smell of Trump is all over Ryan.

(49,036 posts)If you accept those allegations, you will finding yourself accepting allegations that Bill Clinton is a rapist. None of that has been proved either.
Frankly, I think it is very possible that tRump was a rapist and that Bill Clinton is not. I discount the allegations against Bill Clinton.
But Trump is innocent until proven guilty, which is a fundamental principle of USA law for good reason. You can't use the word "prove" in that connection, at least not yet.

(30,817 posts)Trump has done and said so many bizarre things that show such bad judgement and moral bankrupcy, that there is plenty of evidence that he would be a disaster as president.
Focusing on something like a possible child rape makes you sound as ludicrous as a Republican saying that Hillary murdered Foster.

(18,290 posts)that overthrowing Saddam was the worst thing we could have done. When Qaddafi was overthrown (with HRC as secretary of state), and ISIS was given a entire nation-state (Libya) to set up shop, the cycle was complete. Iraq War vets are not going to disagree with Trump on this, even if they might not support him otherwise.
Btw, your words "fight for freedom" with regards to Iraq sounds like FreeRepublic circa 2004.

And even though politicians lied for the reasons to go to war in Iraq. It's rough to think the veterans' service and sacrifice was for nothing...which is what Trump is saying. He minimizes what they have done.
For the record, I opposed the Iraq war from the beginning but always respected our soldiers for doing the best they could with what they had.

(23,503 posts)I don't think that the argument that the Iraq war was a fight for freedom is likely to garner support for Clinton.

(23,503 posts)The US intervened with the intention of establishing a Western-style democracy, and instead terrorism is proliferating. I think that it definitely would have been better for the US not to intervene, regardless of whether or not that meant that Saddan Hussein were still in power today.
