Source: ABC News
CENTRAL PARK, Manhattan (WABC) --
A man was critically injured Sunday morning in an explosion in Central Park near Fifth Avenue and East 62nd Street, and a section of the park has been closed as police investigate.
Eyewitnesses say the victim was walking with a friend when he stepped on something and it blew up.
Police say the accident is likely fireworks-related because of the time of year.
The NYPD bomb squad is on the scene.

(4,758 posts)Every year there's jackasses all over town (I'm in Harlem) shooting off serious sky-artillery; the *pounds* of black powder in those things is scarily unstable - a hard crush, like a man stepping on it, can easily touch it off. He's actually pretty lucky, they can take your head off..

(3,595 posts)It shows several people getting their feet, hands and heads blown off by fireworks.. They look silly with silly expressions on their faces but I think those dumb-asses deserve it. Nobody should play with no fireworks.

It doesn't sound like he was playing with fireworks, but was unfortunate to step on something that was already there.
I think maybe some people don't realize what's available. There is some crazy stuff out there.
