Egypt election results now expected Sunday

Source: CBC

The head of Egypt's election commission says official results from the disputed presidential runoff vote will be released Sunday.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the Supreme Presidential Election Commission, confirmed the timing on Saturday.

Results of runoff vote between the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi and a Mubarak-era politician Ahmed Shafiq were postponed last week as both campaigns claimed victory.

Demonstrators continued their sit-in into the fifth successive day on Saturday in protest against the disbanding of the Islamist-dominated parliament last week and calling for military leaders to rescind a constitutional declaration granting the generals sweeping powers and stripping the next president of much of his authority.

I am glad President Obama went to Egypt to give this speech. His speech was excellent. His is a plan that I would stand behind and will support anyway that I can.

(I may have watched this back then, as we know Gauntanamo is still open, etc.).

These are historic days and Egypt needs our support. I pray for the Egyptian people and I hope for the best for Egypt tomorrow. We are fortunate to have to have such a good man as president.

To your question: I just don't know...

The question is also are Americans willing to work with Egypt putting Eygypt's interests first instead of American Right wing interests. See post below.

4. Egypt's democratic revolution is being crushed by a slow-motion coup

Whatever the final results of Egypt's presidential elections, due to be announced today, it is fair to say that one thing has not changed since the advent of the Arab Spring – the grip of the country's generals on the country's post-Hosni Mubarak politics.

Egypt's "deep state" – represented by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces backed by powerful former regime interests in both business and the media – has moved at every turn to undermine the transition to democracy.

and wish to decide internally their own future in Egypt. This is as it should be.

'The remnants of the old regime – known as the felool – have prosecuted foreign NGOs, attempted to portray foreigners as spies and agents provocateurs'

"The Egyptian government has filed charges against 43 employees of five nonprofit groups accused of operating without a license and illegally receiving foreign funds.

Four of the nonprofits are based in the United States, while one is German. The government alleges that two of the US groups - the National Democratic Institute and the International Republican Institute - received $40 million in 2011, while the United States distributed an additional $50 million to other NGOs in Egypt.

NDI, IRI and other US groups have been operating in Egypt since the mid-2000s, when the US government began funding groups that were not approved by the Egyptian government. Egypt has never officially approved their presence, but it has let them operate freely.

Sixteen of the defendants, including NDI and IRI's directors, are American citizens, though only seven remain in the country. Fourteen are Egyptian citizens."

Egypt dossier outlines NGO prosecution

Government's investigation file shows case against US-funded democracy groups stems from clash over money and influence.

'But as a summary of the government’s investigation recently obtained by Al Jazeera shows, it is a battle over US money and the influence it represents that lies at the crux of a case that has inflamed Egyptian anger over foreign interference.'

'Throughout their testimonies, witnesses expressed suspicion that groups like IRI, NDI and Freedom House spied for the US government. Aboul Naga stated bluntly that they “worked in coordination with the CIA”. Multiple key witnesses described the fall of Mubarak as a chance to right these wrongs.'

'The previous ruling regime was fearful of being criticised, attacked, or accused of violating human rights and freedoms,” Mahmoud said. “Adopting such policy has jeopardised the interests of Egypt, as these organisations have had policies harmful to the interests of Egypt whether economic or political.”'

"The tipping point

Egyptian suspicions of the NGOs' work finally boiled over after the revolution, when tens of millions of dollars in new funding flowed to the groups - roughly $40 million to NDI and IRI alone, according to Egypt.

NDI opened two new offices, in Alexandria and Assiut, while IRI opened three, in Luxor and Alexandria as well as an additional space in Cairo. The groups also went on a hiring spree, in part to prepare for parliamentary election monitoring in November and December. Most of the NDI and IRI witnesses interrogated in the investigation were hired in 2011."

"Aboul Naga testified, incorrectly, that IRI was a "financing arm" of the Republican Party in the United States."

Their concerns were quite obvious to me.....

Egypt set to pull back from NGO crackdown?

[She] said the ruling generals appeared to be involved in a game of brinkmanship with the US but that it was unlikely they would allow the aid to be cut. She said that for the moment they seemed to be playing to nationalist sentiments in a country deeply suspicious of US intentions in the region.

It’s a view that clearly finds a resonance within the Obama administration.

“It’s our sense that much of the NGO issue in Egypt has a lot to do with internal politics. The Egyptian military leadership is watching that trend very closely and thus may not want to act too hastily to intervene,” a U.S. official told Reuters.

"“Americans cannot preach to us night and day about the need to abide by the rule of law and then ask us to break the law to serve their interests,” said one official. Another Egyptian official said that out-of-court settlements could “theoretically be reached within a legal framework,” but that the issue had now gone beyond that stage.

Attempts to reach an out-of-court settlement were “suffocated by the direct and repeated threats made in Washington to cut military aid to Egypt to retaliate against the investigation of American individuals,” according to foreign affairs ministry spokesman Amr Roshdy.

International Republican Institute

iri.org

Founded in 1983, the International Republican Institute (IRI) is an organization, funded by the United States government, that conducts international political programs, sometimes labeled 'democratization programs'.[2]

Initially known as the National Republican Institute for International Affairs, the IRI's stated mission is to expand what it interprets as freedom throughout the world. Its activities include teaching and assisting with political party and candidate development, good governance practices, civil society development, civic education, women’s and youth leadership development, electoral reform and election monitoring, and political expression in closed societies. It has been chaired by Senator John McCain since January 1993.[1][3]

IRI was involved in Haiti prior to the 2004 Haitian coup d'état,[4] in Honduras following the 2009 Honduran constitutional crisis,[5] organised right-wing political parties in Poland,[6] and has been involved in political activities in Egypt during the Arab Spring.[7]

Looks like American dirty business as usual. I could dig deeper than wikipedia, but why bother? WE ALL ALREADY KNOW THE GAMES.

Shit, here is their Facebook page even:

If I was Egyptian I wouldn't want these people in my country either. I don't know whether to just start laughing or what regarding the Guardian editorial. It's not just 'deep state', its a deep pile of shit I see here. They want their own self-determination in Egypt. It's quite simple. I would not want a bloody thing from America with 'Republican' in it's name fucking about in my country either were I Egyptian. They do read newspapers there, you know. They got TeeeVeee too. Damn. The same old games, why not. Why shouldn't they be suspicious there, they have no reason not to be.

FOIA documents show that the IRI was involved in training and supporting pro-coup opposition parties

Latin America/Carribean
IRI was accused by former US Ambassador Brian Dean Curran of undermining his efforts to hold peaceful negotiations between Aristide and his opposition after contested senatorial elections in 2000. According to Curran, Stanley Lucas, then IRI's representative in Haiti, advised opposition leaders not to compromise with Aristide, who would soon be driven from power. Curran also alleged that Lucas represented himself to the opposition as the true envoy of Washington, and his advice—which was contrary to that of the State Department—as advice from the American government.[14] IRI responded to Ambassador Curran's allegations in a letter to the New York Times, stating:

"'Mixed U.S. Signals Helped Tilt Haiti Toward Chaos' (front page, Jan. 29) found support for some of former Ambassador Brian Dean Curran's charges among only a few Haitians, most of them former associates of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. All have obvious motivation to impugn the International Republican Institute's work, and none presented any evidence to back their accusations." [15]

1983 huh....

The question to me is also are Americans willing to work with Egypt putting Eygypt's interests first instead of American Right wing interests.

Looks like a big fat no to me and it's always the same game and we are living the results of it with 9-11, Terror, the hate, etc..
