Norway prosecutors want mental institution for Breivik

Source: CNN.com

(CNN) -- Norwegian prosecutors have asked that alleged mass killer Anders Breivik be transferred to a psychiatric institutions because they believe he is mentally ill, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office told CNN.

If that does not happen, prosecutors will ask for 21 years of prison for Breivik.

He boasts of being an ultranationalist who killed his victims to fight multiculturalism in Norway.

Last month, Breivik promised that he would not appeal if a court finds him sane and guilty.

You can actually end up in custody much longer than if you're found guilty of whatever you did. 'Cause you're in an institution until you are deemed well by the medical staff. Which could very well be never. You will be subject to therapy, drugs, and in the case of a violent offender like Brievik, probably isolation from the general population of the institution except under careful watch. Oh yes, and you will be watched, very closely. There is no parole, and even if you are deemed well and released, your doctors will check up on you and can have you put right back into your dorm at the first sign that you're going - ah - unsteady again.

It's very, very far from the "get out of jail free" card that is portrayed on Law and order or other crime dramas.

...but he's either going to a prison or a psychiatric hospital and is in all likelihood never, ever going to leave whichever he winds up at.

not guilty by reason of insanity and spent the rest of his life in psychiatric hospitals. Brevik would not be getting out of the Norwegian laughing academy for decades.

"Anders Breivik says he hates Muslims, and multiculturalism, and feminism, but really what he hates, like everyone else with a narcissistic personality disorder, which is clearly what he has, and clearly what most terrorists have, is himself. Women who hate themselves tend to harm themselves. Men who hate themselves tend to turn their hate on to the world. They’ll hate whatever they can find to hate. If they’re white, they might, like the Unabomber, whose “manifesto” Breivik actually plagiarised, hate black people. If they’re Muslim, they might hate people who aren’t. Most people who hate other people they don’t even know won’t do much about it. But some people will buy fertiliser, or guns. And use them to blow other people’s lives apart."
