Ecuador president vows to take time on Assange decision

Ecuador's president said Thursday his government would take its time in deciding whether to grant asylum to Julian Assange as the WikiLeaks founder spent a second night at its embassy in London ...
Ecuador's deputy foreign minister Marco Albuja said that President Rafael Correa would give his instructions within 24 hours, but Correa later indicated a longer timeframe was possible.
"He (Assange) presented his reasons. We are going to verify them... We will take the time necessary," Correa told AFP, adding that it would be done "with absolute seriousness and absolute responsibility" ...
The embassy said Assange would remain in the building under the protection of the Ecuadorian government while his application is considered ...

But WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson said "it could take hours, it could take days" before a decision was made.
Speaking after visiting Assange Thursday, he said Ecuador had asked for information from Britain, Sweden and the United States and would study it before making a decision.
Ecuador's London embassy confirmed a decision was expected from Ecuador's capital, Quito, but spokeswoman Priscilla Kohn said it was unclear whether it would come Thursday ...

But he said reports on Wednesday quoting Ecuadors deputy foreign minister Marco Albuja as saying that Correa would give his instructions within 24 hours were based on a misunderstanding by Australian media.
It could take hours, it could take days. I have no idea. I assume that if asylum is not granted then he will leave the embassy and will be arrested, Hrafnsson said ...
