Congress Will Read Stanford Sexual Assault Victim’s Letter Aloud

Source: Time

Members of Congress will read the letter from the woman who was sexually assaulted by a former Stanford University student on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Next week, California Rep. Jackie Speier will sponsor a special order, according to the Huffington Post, where fellow members will read from the statement over the course of an hour. It is expected to be a bipartisan exercise.

Speier and Texas Rep. Ted Poe read excerpts from the victim’s letter on the House floor Thursday, putting the word’s of the woman into the congressional record.

Brock Turner, then a member of the Stanford swim team, was convicted of sexually assaulting the woman in January 2015 and the trial—especially Turner’s sentencing, which critics have said is too lenient—has attracted national attention. The victim in the case read her statement aloud in court and published it online last week, where it went viral.

This is a good thing. I'm sorry it took such a rotten event to bring it about.

This Petition is an effort to force Impeachment hearings for Judge Perksy By the California Assembly. It is not a recall effort

Patriot Act

Details

From broad concern felt among Americans from both the September 11 attacks and the 2001 anthrax attacks, Congress rushed to pass legislation to strengthen security controls. On October 23, 2001, Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner introduced H.R. 3162 incorporating provisions from a previously sponsored House bill and a Senate bill also introduced earlier in the month. The next day on October 24, 2001, the Act passed the House 357 to 66, with Democrats comprising the overwhelming portion of dissent. The following day, on October 25, 2001, the Act passed the Senate by 98 to 1.

So teachers that rape their students don't get 31 days in jail.

Many people agree that Christmas is an appropriate time for a long weekend. Sometimes, we simply find common ground on issues that simultaneously affect us all and are politically expedient.

Will Republicans respond by blaming the victims of sexual assault?

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/john-kasich-advises-female-student-parties-lot-alcohol/story?id=38429352

Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich today told a female college student concerned about "sexual violence, harassment and rape" that she should not "go to parties where there's a lot of alcohol."

The first-year student asked Kasich at a town hall in Watertown, New York, what he would "do in office as president to help me feel safer and more secure regarding sexual violence, harassment, and rape?”

Kasich, the governor of Ohio, spoke about empowering victims by ensuring access to confidential reporting and rape kits. "You ought to absolutely know that if something happens to you along the lines of sexual harassment or whatever," he said.

He continued: "You have a place to go where there is a confidential reporting, where there is an ability for you to access a rape kit, where that is kept confidential, but where it gives you the opportunity to be able to pursue justice, after you have had some time to reflect on it all."
