After Months of Requests, Mugshots of Stanford Rapist Brock Turner Finally Emerge
Source: nbcnews.com
It was the epitome of white privilege, the narrative went a student and star swimmer at prestigious Stanford University is arrested on rape-related charges, and after more than 16 months, he's sentenced to only six months.
And the authorities refuse to let the public see his arrest photo.
Until Monday...

Fucking, what? An arrest 16 moths ago, and the police refused to release a booking photo? I never knew this until today. Such bullshit. This kid wasn't rich. But, he's white as hell. I'd say that was central to the cops' decision not to release the photo. I'm writing the Cali Attorney General's office and my local Assembly rep to complain about this. Mug shots are public records. It should have been available for download within an hour of being taken.
Why deprive us of a portrait of such a pretty white boy? <sarcasm>

The decision not to publish the photo does not appear to be because he is white, remember the victim is in this case is also white.
Curious as to what proof has surfaced that this criminals family is not rich?

Typically, officials make criminal mugshots easily available online or through public request, following protocol to keep courts as transparent and open as possible.
Not in this case.
Turner was initially arrested by the Stanford Department of Public Safety in January, 2015. The SDPS, however, runs under the jurisdiction of the Santa Clara Sheriffs Department but that didnt help in obtaining any records related to his arrest. When journalists requested the mugshot, officials at SDPS said that SCSD was responsible for sharing the photo. But SCSD said SDPS was responsible to releasing the mugshot. The sheriffs department first turned in a mugshot taken at last weeks sentencing trial. He appears to be dressed in a suit.

(51,574 posts)But for the fact that two Swedish students happened to ride by on their bicycles and saw Brock Turner pounding away at what looked like a lifeless woman behind a dumpster --- and then chased him down as he tried to run away, this would have been another unreported/unsolved rape.
Does anyone think this is the first time Brock Turner did anything like this?

I want to puke at the people making this about race.
At the heart of it all, it's about what men can get away with doing to women. If the two men hadn't helped and WITNESSED, does anyone think SHE would have even been able to get the guy to court?
The central issue is women are routinely devalued, disbelieved, discarded. Collateral damage, no matter what their promising future and years of hard work might have looked like.

(20,219 posts)She didn't triumph courageously over bad guys, with her broad shoulders and well developed biceps.
No. She was overpowered and taken to the depths by a privileged little psychopath whose dick endowed him with a long list of favors, mentors, buddies, supporters, and opportunities on a silver platter.
But even so, in a society that blames women for everything that men commit upon us, that routinely rips off women so that men may not have to feel the consequences of their actions, that forces women to live with the damage done them by unrepentant men, that cannot even imagine empathizing with the resulting long-term trauma and re-victimization that millions upon millions of women suffer for the sins of men----
----this woman stared directly into the cold eyes of heartlessness and eloquently stood her ground. For her own sake AND for every woman who is abused by men and then tossed aside as if she were garbage.
She towered over the violence of the perpetrator AND the system, with the might of her words

However, the only way to get any men on this board to pay any attention to a rape thread is to make it about race. They will come out swinging for the racial minority, but could give a shit about the female victim of the crime.
Otherwise, rape threads sink like a stone w/ the exception of a few female and some decent male posters here at DU.

(1,151 posts)The INSTANT you get into that narrative it takes the focus off the HUMAN AGENCY OF THE RAPIST who made a conscious CHOICE and CHOSE TO RAPE. No matter what risky behavior the victim engages in, the focus of this is that a human being used his agency and free will to rape another human being.

The second one (with the jacket) - it kind of looks like a mugshot to me, maybe from a former booking on some other charge ?
It's consistent with reports that he's been a predator in training for a while.

To Brock Turner, I have this to say: You are a monster. Here are my wishes for you. May you live long... but not in good health. And when you die, may your first day in Hell last ten thousand years... and may it be the shortest.
To the lady (and the far too many like her), I have this to say: My wish for you is that in time you will find joy and peace again, that you will know that you are beautiful and no one can change that, and that you will realize that you are unbreakable, and stronger than the vast majority of people can even imagine being.
To those fighting for this beautiful woman and all those like her, never give up and keep fighting the good fight against sexual violence and rape culture. To the two men who saved this young lady's life in particular, you are heroes.
And to those excusing and enabling the violence against this brave woman and all those like her... see my wishes for Brock Turner.
