Weekly Address: Building on America’s Economic Recovery
Source: White House
In this week's address, the President discussed his return to Elkhart, Indiana, the first town he visited as President and one that was among the hardest-hit by the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes. Seven years later, unemployment in Elkhart has fallen from a high of nearly 20 percent to around four percent; more families are back on sturdy ground; more are covered by health insurance; and more students are graduating from high school.
Elkhart is symbolic of Americas recovery, and that progress is due to the sacrifices of hardworking Americans and a series of smart decisions the President made early in his presidency, such as rescuing the auto industry, helping families refinance their homes, and investing in job training, high-tech manufacturing, clean energy, and the infrastructure that creates good new jobs.
The President emphasized that we must continue to come together around common economic goals and push back against policies that protect powerful interests instead of working Americans. Thats the choice America will make this year, and the President believes the future will be brighter if this country works together to build on the progress this country has made in the months and years ahead.

(3,089 posts)They have been sitting on the side lines long enough waiting for you to leave office. It's ok for them to come out and play now, you will not get the credit for the "booming economy" coming. The next President will. But we will remember how you rescued us from the 2008-2009 disaster that faced you when you entered office. And we will remember the GOP Congress and a few of their Democratic partners that sat and planned your demise as you were being sworn in. We won't forget. We promise you. It hasn't been a "perfect" ride for you but it has been a sincere, thoughtful, and relatively scandal free ride. Just think what it might have been had you had help that was equally as sincere and thoughtful.

(129,459 posts)It makes me sick to know the cycle of GOP destruction of this nation and Democrats left to clean up the mess. Add in national amnesia, and the GOP usually manages to wrest control once more, bent on exploitation for selfish gain until we are left in ruins. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. We need to break out of that cycle.
Thanks for the weekly posting!

Employees who did not want to be named told The Truth that they received the news Friday from corporate managers of the Lisle, Ill.-based company. The workers said they were told manufacturing work would be shipped to low-wage countries such as Mexico, Taiwan and China.

Elsewhere in Indiana, United Technology Corp., parent company to Carrier Corp., announced in February that it was closing its Indianapolis and Huntington plants, laying off close to 2,100 employees. Carrier, a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning manufacturer, at the time said it was moving its operations to Mexico because of "ongoing cost and pricing pressures driven, in part, by new regulatory requirements", according to a statement.

Another of those companies that started by people who had a passion for the product but were "absorbed" by investment houses that have a passion for profit?

(21,798 posts)They reported on the panel show Outnumbered that Elkhart's unemployment rate has sky rocketed and the local economy is devastated. All five panelists on the show agreed. One said that Obama's appearance there was "like spitting in the face" of the unemployed.
They seemed pretty outraged by this speech.
