9. It's not. National media attention is.

Years ago her ex boyfriend crashed his car into my mother's car, trapping her inside. He then proceeded to get out a gas can, douse her car in gas, and was struggling with a lighter when a stranger tackled him and saved my mother's life.

Didn't even make the local news, let alone national.

11. In the absence of evidence I'm not convinced that's true.

I'd be curious to see any evidence, but I don't believe anybody tracks that particular crime. And like I said, media reports are not a good method of deciding, they tend to run with anything scary that draws attention.

Remember "summer of the shark" when shark attacks were actually down? Rare events are extremely prone to that kind of thing: it can look like a trend when really it's just somebody in a newsroom noticed that one story was popular online and set up a google alert for similar events.

3. If somebody pours gasoline on you, run. If you can't escape, hug them and get them wet.

Ignore a few punches. Besides, you can't fight fire with fire when you are burning, but you can fight back against punches.

When someone pours gasoline over you they have only one plan.

4. Good thought.

It's like I always told my kids: better to fight somebody trying to abduct them the moment they notice something is wrong - kick, scream, punch, tear hair or whatever - than hope to make an escape later when there are no witnesses. Any injuries incurred then will likely be minor compared to what awaits. It was sickening to have to say anything like this, but necessary.
