Kindergartener Suspended For Bringing Bubble-Blowing ‘Gun’ To School
Source: Huffington Post
Thank God someone intervened. It could have been a soap bath.
That is, if Southeast Elementary in Brighton, Colorado, hadnt stopped a kindergartener who was wielding a bubble-blowing gun at recess. The school subsequently suspended the girl for a day.
I apologized right away and said that I am so sorry she did that, her mother told local news station ABC 7. I appreciate that theyre trying to keep our kids safe, I really do. But there needs to be some common sense. It blows bubbles.
The mother spoke anonymously with ABC7 but identified herself to Fox 31 as Emma. She said hadnt realized that her daughter had put the toy in her backpack before heading to school.

We need some common sense in our society.

(13,297 posts)it was half-serious, half-joking, but I did realize that anything called a 'gun' wasn't funny to folks who are hunting for the real thing

It is a cover for administrators who do not have the intelligence or fortitude to take appropriate actions. Instead they try a one-size-fits-all method of discipline which either over or under punishes but teaches the children that Justice is arbitrary.

(12,194 posts)A bubble gun, can't reasonably be considered "a weapon" or a "facsimile weapon" by any reasonable definition.
That, however, is what they're trying to lean on for justification

(12,194 posts)Since the policy is "zero tolerance on weapons", maybe it would be sensible to draw the line at actual weapons ?
Just a thought...

Years ago I worked in an alternative school. We had a student who was expelled from the regular high school for bringing a bright orange squirt gun to school. I think it was at that point I decided zero tolerance was stupid.

Another, different and wholly arbitrary line as you yourself used.

(18 posts)Good Grief.
What the heck does this have to do with the NRA?
A bubble blowing plastic toy. The lack of common sense and irrational fear of some people is amazing.
How do you guys get through life?

Often through irrational and self-validating means, like calling people "sheeple," allowing oneself the expedient pretense of mental/ethical preeminence.

(33,345 posts)I'm 52. I got carded buying Gin at a drugstore last night. I'm super attractive and look younger than my years, but 31 years younger than my age? "Sorry, no exceptions. We get carded and we work here." Corporate handed down a rule. All must obey.
The school officials have to deal with a "Zero Tolerance" mandate handed down by the school board, which adopted it based on the insistence of lawyers and insurance companies.
