No electricity, no antibiotics, no beds, no soap: A devastating look inside Venezuela's crisis-hit hospitals where 7 babies die a day, bleeding patients lie strewn on the floor, and doctors try to operate without tools

Without soap, antibiotics, power, gloves and x-rays, surgeons are struggling to keep patients alive.
------------

Last summer, the Daily Mail reported how rampant opossums had infested the Luiz Razetti Hospital, killing 17 newborns.

In just one day, the newspaper's reporters witnessed the deaths of seven babies since there were no oxygen tanks, and doctors had to pump air into their lungs by hand.

And he even insists Venezuela's healthcare is one of the best in the world: 'I doubt that anywhere in the world, except in Cuba, there exists a better health system than this one,' (President Nicolas Maduro) he said.

So much lack of shame in those who have the power to help.

One of my beefs with the Chavez-ista regime in Venezuela is that it has failed what I strongly believe is one of the major roles of government: to promote general prosperity. The Chavez regime failed to create a healthy private sector or run its state-owned businesses properly, triggering inflation, capital flight, uncertainty, unemployment and poverty.

This is not to trash socialism as an ideal or as practice. There are some government-run enterprises here and there around the planet, some of which generate positive returns for their citizens. But economically healthy socialist states also have healthy private economic sectors, too. Sadly, Venezuela lacks both and is unlikely to acquire either as long as the current party continues to run it.

A right-wing coup will take over, and the "good old days" of banana republics will return.

It looks that way in Brazil.

prescribe a medicine that you could buy at your pharmacy? Or "hospitals" where patients actually got to lie in beds and there was equipment for saving lives? Those 'good old days'. God willing those will come again soon for Venezuela.

The problem is just like it was back in the late 70's.

I saw this guy who was lauded by the name of Ayatollah Khomeni, left-wing groups and people lauded him since he was anti-Shah.

I did notice though his religious fanaticism, but any objections to that were pooh-poohed by his cheerleaders.

We all know how that turned out.

In Venezuela, I see this same thing with Maduro.
"He's a corrupt asshole, but he's OUR corrupt asshole..."

the new Legislature the PEOPLE elected from doing its job, I would agree but he's not. He packed the Supreme Court with Chavistas who have decided that anything the Legislature passes is now 'unconstitutional'. And to top it off, he now rules by decree. I don't think a RW coup would be much worse for the long-suffering Venezuelan people. BTW, have you seen the posts on DU today about the 'hospital' situation in Venezuela now? Children killed by racoons in one hospital. Ventilators all broken so doctors try to save patients pumping air by hand. Surgeons operating without water, electricity, drugs, equipment on operating tables covered with other patients' blood. And this is just a taste of where the situation is going.
