Philippines' Duterte says communist leader welcome home

Source: Channel News Asia

The leader of the Philippines' communist insurgency will be welcome to return home after nearly three decades in exile and participate in peace talks, president-elect Rodrigo Duterte has said.

Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison wrote in a Facebook post last week he hoped to come home following the landslide May 9 election win of Duterte, with whom he has maintained ties while living in the Netherlands.

"I do not begrudge the NPAs (communist New People's Army) in looking for firearms. But when I reach my oath-taking... they must realise I am the government and I am the enemy but I offer my hand in peace and we can talk," he said at a press conference on Monday (May 16).

Duterte previously said late Sunday that Sison's return to the Philippines would be important in helping to end the rebellion.

(Yes, there's a different Duterte story right above this. He's managing to say a lot in a few days...) The Philippine communist insurgency has implications ranging from Indonesia to India, so this is probably worth pulling out on its own.

Returned to his nation to oppose Ferdinand Marcos politically. He was shot in the head stepping on the tarmac at the airport now named after him.

MANILA, Philippines – Presumptive president Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte on Monday revealed the names of the individuals he wants to be part of his administration.

Among the officials he mentioned is his running mate, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. He said he will ask Cayetano to choose between the Department of Foreign Affairs or the Justice Department or he may opt to stick to the Senate as he also respects that.

“You are my vice-president. Wala pa namang proclamation e,” Duterte said while asking Cayetano to join him in the press conference held at the Matina Enclave Clubhouse, Davao City.

Duterte also mentioned that he offered former vice presidential bet and former Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Perfecto Yasay to serve as the acting Foreign Affairs secretary for a year. He even asked Yasay to take a furlough in his teaching career at a university in Hawaii to serve for a year.

MINDANAO, Philippines—As Mindanaoans hail the first President-elect from their region, many hope to see the end of insurgency that has been plaguing Southern Philippines for the past 40 years.

In his first press conference after winning the May 9 elections in a landslide, the tough-talking Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said on May 15 he will urge Congress to restore the death penalty by hanging and give security forces “shoot-to-kill” orders against organized criminals or those who violently resisted arrest.

Earlier, soon after sensing victory in the presidential polls, Duterte met with his trusted economic advisers to form a transition body to chart an 8-point economic agenda on rural development, tax reform, corruption fight, education, improved tourism, business-friendly government, foreign investments and public-private partnership projects.

The stock market dramatically rose after the announcement of the 8-point agenda.
