Dems: Obama could lose, donors better get moving

WASHINGTON (AP) - In growing numbers, once-confident Democrats now say President Barack Obama could lose the November election.
The hand-wringing reflects real worries among Democrats about Obama's ability to beat Republican rival Mitt Romney, who has proven to be a stronger candidate than many expected. But it's also a political strategy aimed at rallying major donors who may have become complacent.
Interviews with a dozen Democratic strategists and fundraisers across the country show an increased sense of urgency among Obama backers. It follows a difficult two weeks for the president, including a dismal report on the nation's unemployment picture, a Democratic defeat in the Wisconsin governor recall election and an impressive fundraising month for Romney and Republicans.
"We've all got to get in the same boat and start paddling in the same direction, or we're going to have some problems," said Debbie Dingell, a Democratic National Committee member and the wife of Michigan Rep. John Dingell.

(129,566 posts)Seems like a talking point. I never saw any "confident" Democrats. Ever. The 2010 election along with the voter purges and Wisconsin belie any such that the article purports.
I.e., seems a number of so-called "strategists" being quoted in the article (Dingell's wife, Carville, Fowler) are all DLCers. Obama's own staff have never made any such assumptions.

(13,570 posts)under Obama since LBJ. So quit the childish whining, quit sitting in public parks, and go out and campaign to remove the right wingers and replace them with Democrats. Disallusioned? How do they like Citizens United? How do they like the attack on unions and voting rights? Want more of that? Then stay "disallusioned", stay home, and get a right wing spike driven even further up your ass. OR, CAMPAIGN AND VOTE FOR OBAMA AND DEMOCRATS. It's a no-brainer.
please STOP with YOU HAVE TO SETTLE FOR THIS BECAUSE YOU COULD HAVE MUCH WORSE. Just fucking STOP IT.

(20,450 posts)on the front of every Washington Post newspaper brief with this article. A horrible picture of the president looking downtrodden and defeated. (Yeah, some "liberal media" we have!)
The WaPost briefs are typically available at all the Metro train stops and there are Post handlers passing them out to every Metro train rider. Anyway, I took control into my hands. On every one of the briefs I could find (many of them left on the train by riders), I took out a black pen and wrote on the front of the paper: OBAMA 2012! DO NOT BELIEVE CORPORATE MEDIA LIES!!!
It was a small thing for me to do but I hope that it got the message across to anyone who happens to pick up on of those papers.

The President has made his choices and choices have consequences. See, real Democrats are still against Citizens United. They have convictions.
The Race The Republicans Into The Shitter crowd don't get that, but they have few convictions anyway.

(1,054 posts)I don't care if Chu has a Nobel or not, the guy is a freaking moron in terms of not understanding his job. America needs 2 dollar a gallon, not four dollar a gallon gas, and NOW or it's hello President Romney. The job of the Energy Secretary is to make sure Americans have cheap energy in the form they need it so business can thrive.
Holder is also a dumbass. Not only has he played loose with the facts about 'fast and furious' he has no problems sending his minions after pot dispensaries but plenty in sending wall street banksters to jail.
The President is a smart guy, I'l vote for him, of course- and he's infinitely preferable to Romney- but it ain't just money.

(13,508 posts)> America needs 2 dollar a gallon, not four dollar a gallon gas, and NOW
No sunshine: America needs to get its collective head out of its arse with
regards to the true cost of fossil fuels and Chu is one of the first people
to even try that in government. He should be praised not whined at.
Holder is following the orders of his boss when it comes to prioritising prosecutions
(i.e., go after easy targets-that-shouldn't-be-targets rather than the ones that will
affect his friends) so he's about as protected as a politician can be.

(1,054 posts)Because If gas doesn't keep going down then that's what we will have.
The point is, with Romney not ONLY will we still have a fossil fuel economy (which we are going to have for the next 20 to 30 years unless and until someone waves a magic wand), we will have more rightwingers on the SOCTUS, a government far more hostile to LGBT rights and every other ill the Republicans can bring us, all so some folks can feel good about crucifying us members of the lower and middle classes - who still need and use CARS to get to work and take care of family (and are going to continue to do so for several more generations to come) on a cross of green.
Gasoline needs to be cheap and plentiful, the job of Chu and the scientists is to mitigate the consequences of a healthy economy, not preside over economic catastrophe whilst dancing joyfully that we proles can't afford to drive our gas guzzlers anymore.

(1,054 posts)1) Failure to understand how much of your tax dollars are currently subsidizing the fuel industry's profits.
Wrong. Of course the petro-industrial complex is receiving massive subsidies, in everything from the utilization of the war machine to provide a 'stick' to countries who don't want to do business with us (or actually 'Them', Exon, Shell, etc). But that does not change the fact that this is the baseline that American has grown and grown up on. This is NOT the time to get the addict off the drug, when we have a SERIOUS recession. Lower and lower middle class workers need cheap transportation.
2) Bluster with the pro-Romney threat rather than face up to your own responsibility.
I think you need to check your meds. You are rambling incoherently. Are there facts you would like to discuss or are you simply projecting? It isn't a 'threat' it IS the fact that the greatest vulnerability President Obama faces is on the tepid recovery and while Republican obstructionism is greatly to blame, expensive gas and fervid anti-nuke, anti-coal and anti internal combustion attitude is ass backwards and helps the rich of the coasts and hurts the workers.
3) Playing the hyperbolic martyr card because you want to be an ostrich with regard to the real world.
Not even worth replying to. Do you have any facts, data or useful information of any sort, or merely childish insults?
There is a direct correlation between quality of life and the amount of energy consumed. The job of the Government is to provide the maximum amount of prosperity and peace for the citizens. We need to open 10 or 20 new nuke plants a year for the next few decades, increase our drilling and refining, expand solar 100 fold, exploit all of our coal, research fusion and tidal, in other words do EVERYTHING envisioned by the "right" OR the "left".
We need energy; we need LOTS of energy. It's Chu's job to figure out how and how to mitigate any impacts, not to put the brakes on.

(20,450 posts)James Carville and Paul Begala. Obama has very ineffective surrogates and spokespeople. He can't do everything himself. It seems he's out there alone and people expect him to be superman and do everything. No! The Republicans have sure rallied behind Romney. Romney not only has friends in the Corporate Media and wingnut talk radio, he has allies and spokesman all over the punditry shows. He has effective surrogates out there spewing his lies and hate rhetoric.
Where are Obama's friends? Where are the surrogates? Where is the Democratic Party?!?!??!?!

(18,652 posts)he's been such a disaster on the environment, I will vote for him but giving money? No way until I see something different.
He's giving away our continental shelf and the West to oil and gas companies, and he doesn't even insist that they pay their fair share in taxes. Exxon Mobil paid 15% income tax in 2011.
He's subsidizing nuclear energy for the benefit of private corporations.

(22,271 posts)It's the candidate and the strategy. I see the DLC is back to the 9-state strategy and 4 years of "who else are they going to vote for?" is now coming back around to bite them in the ass. But ya gotta love the "b-b-b-but, they had more money!" defense. That way they don't have to give a serious look as to what the REAL problems are.
