Maine student reacts to being called an idiot by LePage

Source: Bangor Daily News

FARMINGTON, Maine — College freshman Ally Hammond, an Auburn native, said she was shocked a sign she held up Tuesday prompted Gov. Paul LePage to storm off, calling her and another student “idiots.”

Hammond, 19 and a psychology major, said she doesn’t dislike LePage because he’s a Republican but because she doesn’t believe he “represents Maine values.”

“He’s outwardly very rude, he makes offensive comments and he makes no effort to protect our environment, which I think is one of Maine’s most important assets,” Hammond said. “He’s openly insulted educators and education itself for some reason, which is another big problem.”

Hammond said she and fellow student Nick Bray felt compelled to make known their feelings about Maine’s bombastic governor. She said their intent was to hold their signs quietly in the back of the crowd and that they didn’t intend to disrupt the ceremony meant to honor former UMF president Theo Kalikow by renaming a building in her honor.

2. That governor is an idiot, but....

I'm not sure that her sign was okay at that event. The other one - comparing the two environmental records with grades - I have no problem with.

Still, the governor should not even have commented.

I am always stunned by how such a low life ass hole can be elected to represent the people of a county, state, etc. are they that fookin' stupid?

Gohmert...Cruz...Lee...McGrumpy. Places in the world I would never consider visiting, let alone live.

If Maine is like Ohio the print media is also very one sided favoring the Republican party.

Lepage had the pleasure of running against a liberal independent, and a democrat twice. The scary thing is the race for Angus Kings seat is setting up the same way, and Lepage is intending to run

that President Obama had to see during his two terms. Those signs were rude, racist, lies, name calling, and very low. The President always took the high road and never stormed off calling the sign holders names or insulted them. This is the difference between someone who is knows how to act as a tasteful public official and one who is ignorant and rude. Apparently the republicans believe this behavior is acceptable.

7. Agree with all you say but it would have been more inappropriate if protest signs were displayed

when the President was awarding a Medal Of Freedom or some other honor. In the same way it was inappropriate to protest this governor while he was presenting an honor. The difference you point out about how the President reacts and how this idiot governor reacts to an inappropriate protest is spot on. Class vs crass.

FARMINGTON - As the building dedication ceremony for the Theodora Kalikow Education Center on the University of Maine at Farmington campus got started Tuesday with a speech by Gov. Paul LePage, he abruptly ended it, threw his arms up and said looking over at two UMF students holding up signs, "I can't do this." As he left he said, "Thank you, idiots."

One of the signs held up read, "LePage: Maine's Shame" and the other "On Environmental Issues, Theodora Kalikow, A, Paul LePage, F."

UMF students Allison Hammond and Nickolas Bray, who had been holding up the signs said as the governor was leaving they hadn't expected him to walk off in response to their signs.

"I'm was very surprised to be called 'idiot' by Gov. Paul LePage," Hammond said. "I will never forget that for the rest of my life."

On LePage's exit, University of Maine System Chancellor James Page, who was expected to speak after the governor, quickly went to the lectern and began his speech.

The comments make me sad for my hometown. I grew up as a UMF "rat". (It's an outstanding school, too, btw, top rated.) Hate radio was just toxic up there for too long.

His actions form a clear basis for impeachment. Elected officials serve all of their constituents, no matter what the constituents think or who they voted for. Calling a constituent an "idiot" (or, in the earlier thread, publicly declaring a group of constituents as "enemies&quot shows that LePage has declined that responsibility. He should be removed from office as soon as possible.

"obummer" is a RW slur against Obama.

JURY RESULTS

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Apr 28, 2016, 07:38 AM, and the Jury voted 5-2 to HIDE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Obummer is a name both left and right have used. The man is the most powerful man in the world and is almost out of office. This is not going to hurt him.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: While I believe this post is sarcastic, I'm going to vote to hide. Even in fun, we don't need to repeat RW language.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I say leave it. I certainly don't agree with that part of the comment, and don't like the obummer reference either, but just look around DU. There are plenty of people already here that don't care for Obama and we don't hide all those posts.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I'm of two minds on this one honestly. His posting history is full of poorly worded and and poorly thought out commentary.

Given his name, I suppose that he's trying to imitate your standard redneck idiot?

Still though, a comedian he might be trying to be, even comedy has its limits.
