Congressman Chris Van Hollen wins Maryland's Democratic Senate primary
Source: The Guardian
Chris Van Hollen, the seven-term congressman from Washingtons northern Maryland suburbs, has won the Democratic primary against congresswoman Donna Edwards for one of the states soon-to-be-vacant Senate seats on Tuesday night.
The win in heavily Democratic Marylands primary all but assures that Van Hollen, a key ally of House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, will be seated in the US Senate in 2017.
Van Hollens win also likely means that longtime Democratic Senator Barbara Mikulskis seat will likely be filled by a man an outcome that Emilys List, the powerhouse fundraising organization dedicated to electing pro-choice women to office, unsuccessfully spent $2.4m to avoid.
Had four-term representative Donna Edwards won the race, it would have put her on track to be the second African American woman ever elected to the US Senate; that distinction may now fall to California attorney general Kamala Harris, who is running for a vacant Senate seat in her home state.

(33,525 posts)I personally have a low opinion of Senator Sanders, but I don't claim that most people do.
My environmental views inform my low opinion of Senator Sanders, and I do confess that I would think far less favorably of any candidate aligned with him. His opinion of how to address the real tragedy of climate change would be an environmental disaster of the highest order were it to be enacted, which it won't be.
I suspect that people who have a high opinion of Senator Sanders, based on my experience here, can't believe that anyone doesn't completely agree with them, a position that is somewhat narcissistic if you ask me, but maybe you're not asking.
I would think that if Senator Sanders was held in high regard, he'd be winning, so maybe at least one of us is living in an alternate universe. By using something called "numbers" it appears he's losing, but if you think he's winning, well...um...what can I say?
Have a nice afternoon.

(15,369 posts)very strong support in MD. I know from working the polls for the Hillary campaign during early voting in MD that BOTH were also VERY well represented there - lots of signs, bumper stickers, and enthusiastic poll workers - ALL of whom were respectful of one another and fun to chat with. Lots of people were torn.
Interestingly, at the time I worked the polls, Sanders had nary a poll worker in sight and only two signs posted. To be fair, that was at only one location, but it was in an area generally deemed to be Sanders-friendly.
So how would his "support" have helped Donna any more in this election? He wasn't even helping himself. Just sayin' ....
In the long run, Hillary WILL have Donna's back, because that's what Hillary does, despite fevered and hyperbolic narrative to the contrary. She recognizes good people and puts them to work, whether they are her supporters or not. And Donna is - as is Chris. Hillary brings people together to accomplish things.

It's easy to forget that most people are more cordial than we find here on DU.

(15,369 posts)Too many people online seem to be living in virtual rather than in actual reality. They really need to come out, "smell the roses," and see life outside the narrow echo chamber.
They might then realize that a lot of people whom they dismiss so lightly online for whatever skewed logic are wonderful human beings.

I wouldn't tell 'em about this place-too corrupting, I think! LOL!

(45,850 posts)IN THE FINAL DAYS leading up to Marylands Democratic voters going to the polls on Tuesday to choose their U.S. Senate nominee, Rep. Donna Edwards has been barraged by ads and mailers from the Super PAC backing her opponent, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, called the Committee for Marylands Progress.
A television ad assails Edwards as one of the least effective members of Congress, contrasting her career with Van Hollens legislative record. It mentions no foreign policy issues, despite the dominant issue motivating one of the Super PACs largest funders.
