Senate Rejects Effort To Cut Food Stamp Program

Source: Associated Press

The Senate has turned back an effort by Kentucky Republican Rand Paul to drastically cut food stamp spending and replace the food aid program with block grants to the states.

The 65-33 vote to defeat the Paul amendment was part of debate on a five-year, half-trillion-dollar farm and food bill.

The farm bill would reduce food stamp spending by $4 billion over the next decade by eliminating abuses. Paul’s amendment would have saved $322 billion over the same period by capping spending at $45 billion a year and turning over funding decisions to the states.

I worked in Eastern KY for a year; one of the most impoverished areas in the country. We called it Botswana Ya'll and wondered if we were violating the Prime Directive by being there.

People there were literally living in a 3rd world country.

'literally' living in a first-world country (unless eastern KY is no longer part of the United State , a discrepancy which arguably renders the pathos all the more intense.

My kids are 'paulites' because of alex jones... I am left to wonder (because I refuse to even look) what their source of info, alex jones has to say about this legislation sponsored by rand paul being defeated. This should make for an interesting bit of conversation with my kids later today....
