NeW HAVEN With the future of his presidential bid on the line, Sen. Bernie Sanders took on Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, multinational corporations and economic inequality in a rousing populist speech on the New Haven Green.
Playing to the youthful audience of thousands, Sanders' wide-ranging remarks focused heavily on a "rigged economy," where the middle class subsidize wealthy corporations. "Brothers and sisters," Sanders said, "we are going to change our national priorities."
"We need an economy that works for all of us, not just the 1 percent,'' Sanders said, calling New Haven a metaphor for what is happening in the United States and pointing out the disparity between wealthy Yale University and poor children in the city.
"Do not get into your head an austerity way of thinking, that we can cut this and cut that. We don't have to do that,'' Sanders said. "Enough is enough."

"Enough is enough" is right on!!

Business as usual is over 1%.
The time to pay your fair share is right around the corner.
This includes profits made off pollution.

(15,480 posts)NEW HAVEN With the future of his presidential bid on the line, Sen. Bernie Sanders took on Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, multinational corporations and economic inequality in a rousing populist speech on the New Haven Green. New Haven Parks Director Rebecca Bombero estimated the crowd on the green at 14,000. Police said about 6,500 people came though security, with thousands of others assembled in the area around the green.
The latest Quinnipiac Poll shows Sanders trailing Hillary Clinton by 9 percentage points, but the race may be closer. Clinton has made three appearances in Connecticut over the last week. Late Sunday, the Clinton campaign announced that Bill Clinton would hold rallies in Hartford and New Haven on Monday.
At the Sanders rally, organizers with clipboards sought volunteers to help a get-out-the-vote push on Tuesday while Sanders supporters carried homemade signs. As the crowds began to arrive under blue skies and bright sunshine, Sanders was walking around shaking hands with people.
"I got close to him, and I screamed like a Beatles fan," said Nora Kaszuba of Norwich. "I felt like I was touching a rock star. "I love his rhetoric about free public college for all and health care, and I hope he speaks about both issues today."
The evening began with remarks by Michael Stipe, former lead singer with the rock band REM. "This is our moment,'' he said.

(1,166 posts)The rigged economy is really everything or, rather, the basis of everything... the wars, the increasing poverty, the loss of anything approximating democracy, and much more. Glad he's using the word "austerity" because I think a lot of Americans think of that as a European problem and don't really grasp what is actually going on in terms of globalization. If they did, many more would take those Clinton bank speeches a lot more seriously!

(10,597 posts)Thanks, OS, for gathering up these reports. I got to watch the rally on live stream. It really was a good one. The crowd hung on every word and interacted with him several times. Their open minds and ears & energy came through to Bernie and made his speech even better than it usually is. Go Bernie!
