4 federal agents shot, motel destroyed in Kansas

Source: CNN

(CNN)What started as a would-be arrest at a Kansas motel ended with four federal agents shot and the motel engulfed in flames.

Officers from the U.S. Marshals Service's Fugitive Task Forces were looking for a suspect Saturday night at the Country Club Motel, Topeka police Lt. Colleen Stuart said.

But when they reached the motel, someone opened fire and struck two U.S. marshals, an FBI agent and a fourth federal agent, Stuart said. It was not immediately clear which agency the fourth agent belonged to.

Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, Stuart said.

About the same time, a fire broke out at the motel. That blaze burned for more than three hours, engulfing the building and sending flames high into the night sky, CNN affiliate WIBW reported.

Topeka Fire Marshal Michael Martin told WIBW that the motel was destroyed but would not comment on whether the blaze was intentionally set or whether authorities found any bodies inside.

it was seedy 50 years ago when I was a kid and I don't think it has gotten any better. It always creeped me out. Next to a bar that had an even worse reputation. Lots of history, probably not much of it good.

FBI: Task Force trying to capture Orlando Collins at time of shootout, large fire; Body found

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force was trying to capture Orlando Collins at the time of a shootout that injured three federal agents, the FBI confirms. A large blaze following the gunfire destroyed the motel where it occurred.

The 28 year-old suspect was on the Northeast Kansas Most Wanted List when investigators determined he may be at the Country Club Motel and went there Saturday to arrest him. Collins had been linked to armed robberies that occurred as recently as the day before and was considered armed and dangerous.

The FBI said a body was found inside the motel room where Collins was believed to be, but they have not identified it.

Two Deputy U.S. Marshals and an FBI agent were wounded during the firefight, suffering non-life threatening injuries. The hotel had been evacuated and no one else staying there was injured, the FBI said.
