Dutch journalist arrested in Turkey for criticising Erdoğan

A Dutch journalist was arrested early Sunday at her home in Turkey for tweets deemed critical of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, according to her Twitter account.

“Police at the door. No joke,” wrote Ebru Umar, a well-known atheist and feminist journalist of Turkish origin.

Umar recently wrote a piece critical of Erdoğan for the Dutch daily Metro, extracts of which she then tweeted, leading to her arrest.

“I’m not free, we’re going to the hospital” for a medical examination before being taken to face prosecutors, she said in a second tweet as she left her home in Kusadasi, a resort town in western Turkey.

BTW it's not entirely clear from the Guardian piece (I'll try to find a better article), but Ebru Umar is a DUTCH BORN citizen (of Turkish descent), who wrote a piece critical of Erdogan in a DUTCH newspaper, who was arrested in Turkey whilst on VACATION!

Turkey already has the EU over a barrel with the threat of more refugees.

Turkey has already been promised visa free access to the EU for any turkish citizen (that's most of the EU right there)

the EU has done this to themselves by not organizing themselves to deal with the refugees, and relying on Turkey. And now the EU is going to pay.

She committed no crime over which Turkey Erdogan has any authority.

President Erdogan is a tyrant whose power comes after a series of three snap elections. The first two failed to get him enough support in parliament to make constitutional changes he wanted giving the president more power, while the third ond was clearly fixed. Thugs like Erdogan need to be removed from power by any means necessary.

6. I've been lucky enough to have visited Turkey a few times.

It was a warm and inviting country and you felt very safe. I'm not sure I'll be going back anytime soon. It's sad actually.

You can't even criticize this man in Germany without the threat of arrest.
