Cruz backers to try to block LePage from national convention

Source: Sun Journal

BANGOR, Maine — Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz think they can storm the party’s state convention on Saturday, which could leave Gov. Paul LePage off the list of delegates to the national convention in July.

The behind-the-scenes tension involving the governor — a supporter of Republican front-runner Donald Trump — belied a quiet start to the convention on Friday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, where delegates voted on platform changes and national committee members.

Their move angered the governor, who told conservative talk radio host Howie Carr that the Cruz campaign rejected his proposal for a “unity ticket.”

“I’m disappointed that they’re so arrogant that they’re going to go against the will of the Maine people,” he said.

There is no talk of unity.

Everyone who was there and was interviewed talked of supporting Cruz or Trump and promised to make Cleveland into a circus if they didn't get their candidate.

Supporters of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won five of the six congressional district-level delegates to the July national convention that were decided on Saturday morning at the convention, but their plan to stop Gov. Paul LePage from being a delegate failed.

The governor, who supports front-runner Donald Trump, won election as a delegate from Maine’s 1st District, alongside Cruz supporters Joshua Dunlap and Eric Lusk.

The 2nd District was run by Cruz: Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason of Lisbon Falls, Rep. Stacey Guerin of Glenburn and Earl Bierman won there.
