More than 500 pounds of explosives stolen from train
Source: cbs
Federal law enforcement investigators are searching in at least three states for more than 500 pounds of explosives stolen from a CSX train, CBS News has learned.
CBS News Justice Department and Homeland Security correspondent Jeff Pegues reported a law enforcement source says the amount stolen has authorities concerned that the explosives could fall into the wrong hands.
Sources say the theft was reported two days ago but the case has not yet gone public. The ATF is considering putting out an advisory and announcing an reward in the coming days.
The CSX train was traveling from Chicago through Ohio en route to Detroit. Somewhere along the way, investigators believe the explosives were stolen. According to a law enforcement source, when the train car of explosives arrived in Detroit, half of the shipment was gone.

(16,038 posts)Or were the explosives only "classified" as fireworks but actually dynamite?

Technically the explosives are classified as fireworks but because they are commercial grade combined with the quantity makes them extremely dangerous. The ATF says they are a lot more volatile and typically only handled by professionals."

(15,882 posts)among the terrorist set. (There even appears to be a special set of options, but that's another post).
But just because fireworks could be used doesn't mean they are, or that it should even be suggested ahead of a good handful of much more likely scenarios. It is dramatic to think of a terrorist group unwrapping 50,000 black cat firecrackers as they warm themselves by the fire, however...
And, just because it was reported doesn't mean it really happened that way. This is Amerika after all.
Millions of people, and certainly anyone who reloads or shoots black powder, already know that one can buy whole cans of black powder for such a project, a lot easier than buying guns or ammo. Or they can steal it - it is stored in millions of homes and shops today. Terrorists know this - and have a better than average knoweldge of bomb building, thanks to us and the democracy we have spread around the world.

So while it is possible, my point is that it isn't the most likely scenario, and distracts us from much more likely threats.
Anyway, It takes more expertise than just stealing firecrackers to build something that will do much more than burn down your garage. Notice how a fuse and detonator placed in a can doesn't even hardly disturb the vegetation near the camera.
So yeah, could be. But more than likely not.

WASHINGTON Federal authorities on Saturday said they recovered a large shipment of commercial-grade fireworks stolen from a CSX train traveling between Chicago and Detroit.
Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives spokeswoman Ginger Colbrun said the 30 cases of commercial fireworks were recovered based on a tip the agency received. Authorities have made no arrests and the investigation is ongoing, she added.
It is possible, Colbrun said Friday, that the material could have been taken during the train's stopover in Ohio. Authorities said it was not immediately clear why the shipment may have been targeted. The material could have represented a potential danger in the hands of inexperienced people, Colbrun said.
