Trump assails Clinton, promises not to become boring

Source: Reuters

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump attacked his top Democratic rival Hillary Clinton on Friday, calling her "crooked," and promised his supporters that he would not bore them by becoming overly presidential.

* * *

"I can tell you that if I go too presidential, people are going to be very bored," the New York real estate baron told Fox News in an interview that will air on Saturday. He added that he worried his supporters would "fall asleep."

He went on to say that Clinton "is a person who's got many, many flaws" and that she's "the worst possible representative a woman can have," as he shifted his focus away from Republican rivals and toward the Nov. 8 presidential election.

"The only thing she's got going is the women card," Trump said in the excerpts released by the network on Friday. "We call her 'Crooked Hillary' because she's a crooked person. She's always been a crooked person."

Makes no sense, unless it's meant in a self-effacing way.

He knows his audience. They need constant drama, provocation, outrage, etc.

He's promising not to drop the performance, or even tone it back.

Trump's nothing if not a great showman, and these days, as you know, that gets you more than halfway there.

That said, I'm glad it's him up there and not a Greg Stillson-like megalomaniac like Ted, a new-world-order shill like Jeb, or a narco like Marco. I always get the feeling that Trump's shtick is mostly just that, an act.

"May you live in interesting times."

Things would be real interesting with imbecile Trump as president.

Mrs. Clinton can safely ignore Donald Trump in the general and focus on reaching out, positively, to her own constituents. She commands the support of a majority of likely voters already and by taking the high road she can allow Trump's polarity to push most undecided voters her way as well.

That's an overwhelming victory in the making, by simply not bothering to engage with Trump.

Even better, the worse Trump acts, the more he is going to affect downticket candidates as more and more conservatives simply lose interest and stay home, harming a thousand other Congressional, state, and local elections.

The Republicans have known this for a long time and they're already working on a long-shot plan to either push Trump into a third party candidacy or run one of their own, in hopes that no candidate wins a majority of electoral votes. Then they can easily steal it in Congress by not voting at all.

But Trump's vitriolic speech makes it much less likely for either himself or a third party to get close enough to steal it. He's already proving to be a worse candidate than Mitt Romney, which is... astonishing.
