Johnson & Johnson becomes first N.J. company to part ways with ALEC

Source: New Jersey Star Ledger

TRENTON — Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceutical giant based in New Brunswick, announced today that it has parted ways with the American Legislative Exchange Council.

"We have been in dialogue with ALEC for some time, and while we acknowledge ALEC’s recent decision to focus only on innovation and growth-supporting policies, we have decided to suspend our participation and membership,” Carol Goodrich, Johnson & Johnson's director of coporate communication, said in a statement today.

Johnson & Johnson was one of ALEC's top corporate members, with a seat on its private enterprise board. It is the first New Jersey-based company to sever ties with the group.

ALEC is a conservative nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., that writes and distributes model bills for use in the states. Its members are nearly 2,000 state lawmakers and close to 300 companies and think tanks. Most of its initiatives focus on fiscal issues like deregulation and privatization.

Notice after ALEC has corrupted the system....the enablers are now JUMPING like RATS from the SHIP!

But, the damage has been done...it's a little late.. I had hoped to expect better from J&J.

But...they finally had to sign off..

useful and helpful causes. The Stand Your Ground law is based, in my opinion, on a misunderstanding about how the law of self-defense traditionally works and a waste of time -- besides it encourages people to kill. Shame on ALEC for having anything to do with that.

I can understand that a company that makes baby powder and baby oil among other things would not want to be sponsoring Stand Your Ground legislation.

This is a wise step on Johnson & Johnson's part.
