New York’s Mayor Responds as Brooklyn Voter Purge Doubles to 126,000
Source: U.S. Uncut
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is demanding an explanation from the citys Board of Elections after the purge of registered Democrats in Brooklyn has doubled from 63,000 to 126,000.
As US Uncut previously reported, Kings County, where Brooklyn is located, has seen a 7 percent drop in the number of registered Democratic voters between November 2015 and April 2016. But a new investigation by WNYC has revealed that the New York City Board of Elections actually purged 126,000 voters in that time period a 14 percent drop in 5 months. Now, Mayor de Blasio is demanding to know why there was such a precipitous drop in registered voters just before the primary.
This number surprises me, de Blasio told WNYC. I admit that Brooklyn has had a lot of transient population thats obvious. Lot of people moving in, lot of people moving out. That might account for some of it. But Im confused since so many people have moved in, that the number would move that much in the negative direction.
Kings County was just one of seven counties, out of a total of 63, where the number of registered Democrats fell, while registration increased in all other 56 counties. This is particularly odd, since Brooklyn the home of Bernie Sanders, as well as the home of Hillary Clintons campaign headquarters is a hotbed of political activity.

From 63,000 to 126,000... that's a shocking number that EVERY DEMOCRAT should decry! Real Democrats don't tolerate voter suppression!

(3,269 posts)Turnout was extremely low in my precinct, which is known for its political activism. There were about 300 Democratic voters in an area that saw excited voters wrapped around the block to vote for Obama in a past election. The count was roughly 60-40 for Clinton-Sanders. Nobody was handing out palm cards or information for any candidate.
I experienced no problems but have been voting Democratic for years. We voted on paper affidavits for this primary. The delegate portion was a bit confusing because the type was small. The text said, "Vote for any seven." Sanders had six pledged delegates and Clinton had seven.
In past years, there was one time when my name disappeared from the rolls for one election. I was extremely annoyed and felt disenfranchised. They did give me a provisional ballot. My point is that the system is imperfect and when it's your name that's left out it feels horrible.
As the Mayor noted, Brooklyn can be a transient place, as it is the area where many young professionals get their first apartments and/or start their families. However, to have 120,000 disappear from the rolls probably means there was either one heck of a glitch or an overly overdue updating of the voter rolls. I am glad that an investigation is underway. Personally, I have seen nothing but enthusiasm and respect for Sanders, even from Clinton voters. It will take a lot of solid evidence to convince me that there was a deliberate purge aimed at suppressing the vote.

Odds are this had every bit as much of a chance to impact Hillary just as much, and since it's purging of registered Democrats and not this new band of fair weather, I'm registering out of convenience Democrats, it likely impacted Hillary even more.
pnwmom
(108,994 posts)it probably impacted Hillary more because Brooklyn was an area where she did well.
Having left Brooklyn more than 50 years earlier to attend college in Chicago, Bernie didn't have much of a connection down there.

The neighborhoods that trended towards Sanders were mostly places where younger white persons settle. The rents are more reasonable there. The areas with a high concentration of African Americans and/or high incomes went for Clinton. A large swath of Brooklyn is naturally Clintonian.

(362 posts)In general, Bernie voters are highly intelligent while Hillary voters are low information and clueless that she is a neocon and Wall Street supporter and a very close friend and partner of the Bush family. (26,060 posts)Look, newbie. I'm going to give you the respect of a response even though you've basically called me ignorant (low information) and stupid (clueless). Your labels for her have been tossed around with such abandon, I simply yawn at them. I've been fighting for liberal causes probably since you've been in diapers. I long ago realized there are no perfect candidates and certainly not someone who decided to become a Democrat and use MY party for his own ends. I'm voting for Hillary because she's a fighter and has been fighting for causes I believe in and has been fighting them for decades. Do I agree with her on everything? Of course not. But I don't agree with Bernie on everything either so I have to make a choice in the primary (which I did on Tuesday). Your insults make me do nothing but roll my eyes and laugh. I couldn't possibly care less what an anonymous poster on the internet has to say about my vote. But keep insulting us - that's bound to bring me over to your side....in a galaxy far, far from here.
egalitegirl
(362 posts)You probably mean Bill Clinton and not Hillary Clinton as the smart one. Hillary is no fighter. She was a Goldwater Republican. She also actually believed that a youtube video caused the Benghazi episode. It is clear that she was not in control of the situation and was fed some talking points which she completely believed. Let us be honest. Hillary would not be where she is if her husband had not been President. In this sense, she is similar to the women from Third World countries who only led their countries because their husbands were once the leaders.
Hillary stands for Wall Street, wars and is a partner of the Bush family. These are facts. She fights for them, not us.
leftynyc

The first website says no definition found and then gives the following sentence as an example, "The aggression of these Hillary-posers is much more common in Freeperland, and it's what gives them away." Doesn't seem to match up because you used it as an accusation against Bernie supporters.
Honestly, I have no idea what the word means. Care to elucidate? Who coined it and why?

(7,754 posts)for the last few months. Sanders has come up some but it was mostly lots of media hype that he had a chance of winning NY. Just because people repeat something often enough doesn't make it true. Hillary is also calling, very loudly, for an investigation. I suspect it was her voters who got purged. So lets all settle down and find out what happened so it doesn't happen again.
