National Park Service to make Jimmy Carter honorary park ranger today

Source: AJC

12:30 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2016

Plains — He’s been president of the United States, won a Nobel Peace Prize, and is still a pretty good pull-no-punches- political pundit .

Now Jimmy Carter is about to add something else unique to his resume:

Honorary national park ranger

National Park Service director Jonathan B. Jarvis will bestow the title — and the iconic Ranger’s hat that goes with it — on Carter here this afternoon. The ceremony will take place in the auditorium of the old Plains High School, now the visitors center and museum of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which the park service operates.

As president, Carter created 39 different National Park Service units, ranging from the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, to the Women’s Rights and the War in the Pacific National Historic Parks located in Seneca, N.Y, and Guam, respectively.

a park ranger. I don't remember all the details but it broke his heart when rangers started wearing guns. He said he never ever wanted to be a policeman.

... said the same.

They wanted to be naturalists and guides to the natural world.
Now they have to do it all.

and NPS rangers came up on each side of the SUV with guns drawn but pointing down (at least). I watched them approach in the rear views. freaked me and the missus out.

in the middle of nowhere, in late September, with no one else in miles. it was really aggressive and confrontational. they're going to wind up shooting somebody who gets nervous.

tricky speed limits there, too.

including creating new NPS sites. Glad he's clear from the recent cancer treatment which has affected so many relatively young members of his family. At a college hall I saw him debate Ford; in Dec. 1980 just after the election defeat to Raygun we saw him and his group come into a theater where we were, for a performance of the play 'Amadeus'; and last time c. 2006 at a book signing tribute to his mother Miss Lillian. Intelligent, kind person he is with clear, light blue eyes and that famous smile.

NPS staffers I've known are very dedicated, hold advanced degrees, are even natured and excellent educators as needed to serve the public. They work very hard for the Service which has been under pressure from cutbacks and federal budget shutdowns for many years. Once at the Frederick Douglass historic home "Cedar Hill" in DC on a professional visit, a Ranger there let me try on her hat! Not my style but fun!
