The Latest: Sanders lands in Rome for Vatican conference

Source: Newsday

9:05 a.m.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has landed in Rome to attend a Vatican conference steeped in his lifelong passions of economic and social justice.

The Vermont senator is making the trip even while he faces a crucial New York primary against rival Hillary Clinton next week.

The self-described democratic socialist is an admirer of Pope Francis and will join several speakers commemorating the 25th anniversary of "Centesimus Annus," a high-level teaching document by Pope John Paul II on the economy and social justice at the end of the Cold War.

The roughly 24-hour break from the campaign comes just five days before the New York primary.

Sanders is joined by his wife, Jane Sanders, and 10 family members, including four grandchildren.

Outside the East Coast, where Catholicism has had a stronghold since the influx of Irish, German, Polish and Italian immigrants in the middle of the 19th century, the church must also be “more evangelical,” said Notre Dame professor Timothy Matovina, author of “Latino Catholicism: Transformation in America’s Largest Church.”

check speaking fees generally? Hillary is doing and has done nothing wrong in receiving them. In fact, her fees are literally "chump change" compared to those received by Donald Trump and others, including the late President Ronald Reagan. Clinton also donates all or most of her fees to the Clinton Foundation. http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2015/jun/16/occupy-democrats/liberal-group-claims-all-hillary-clintons-speaking/ If that isn't similar to volunteering, I don't know what is.

This is such a silly charge, a blatant attempt at dividing Democrats, and yet another attempt to smear HRC with the same smears used by RW GOPers and CDSers, which is just one of many reasons why I have become extremely disillusioned with Senator Sanders. Even Kathleen Parker, no friend to Hillary Clinton, defends her speaking fees. See https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-fight-over-hillary-clintons-speaking-fees-is-ridiculous/2016/02/05/ca4d8952-cc4e-11e5-ae11-57b6aeab993f_story.html

Just wait until Bernie enters the private sector. He certainly won't be giving speeches for "chump change." He'll certainly ask for market rates. But, as always, IOKIBSDI.

Because it costs less than the iraq war.

It was a truncated, 10-minute version of his stump speech that he has already given thousands of times, and it was not at the Vatican, but at an annual academic conference to study a PRIOR Pope's encyclical held in Vatican City, not in the Vatican itself. And the Pope was not there.

But who was there was 10 of Sanders' family members, whose Roman holiday was paid for with campaign dollars. Last I checked that is a felony.

I don't know which expenses were or weren't covered or what the rules are on it, but the cost of a chartered plane doesn't go up when you take more people along. So the additional expense for the family were probably minimal.
