Wyden blocks intelligence bill amid concerns over civil liberties
Source: The Oregonian
WASHINGTON Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., on Monday blocked quick passage of controversial intelligence bill amid concerns that it gives the government too much power to secretly collect data on U.S. citizens.
Wydens decision to place a hold on a bill that would extend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act for five years is just the latest installment in his long-running skirmish with the White House over the rules and practices for collecting and analyzing massive amounts of digital data.
Wyden has sought details for months on the number of Americans whose data has been collected as part of surveillance of foreign citizens who are or interest to intelligence officials. The government has yet to provide an answer that satisfies Wyden.
The second concern is that a U.S. citizen could have his or her personal information and communication analyzed as a by-product of an operation directed at a foreign citizen. Wyden is demanding that the government first obtain a warrant to review the information about the U.S citizen. Current law considers that additional information to be covered by the original warrant giving permission to monitor a foreign citizen, a practice Wyden condemns as a backdoor search.

(23,864 posts)...then turned around and supported the legislation he'd blocked...after he was promised a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing into intelligence gathering- which came to nothing.
First, the flip: Senator vows to block surveillance bill over privacy concerns
Then, the FLOP: 2 senators win promise of a Patriot Act hearing
I voted for the guy but if he pulls something similar in the near future, he's going to start looking like a joke.

(21,653 posts)You've nailed it. It's what he does. I acknowledge that this is good, but I won't forget his support of Medicare privatization with Paul Ryan. I want him primaried and replaced by a real progressive in 2016. To think he based his career on his work with the Gray Panthers and senior citizens, now he wants to rip their Medicare benefits.
Dude is a total windsock. And he lives in New York, not Oregon.

This is going to sound extremely cynical... I wonder if he plays hard to get but not impossible, hoping for someone to buy him out for just the right price? Obviously that is a harsh accusation but hey, this is just a discussion board.

(57,936 posts)Surely, if the government can deploy large numbers of luggage checkers and security people at every airport, large or small, it can get a warrant before it snoops on American citizens.
It is illogical to think that we can have a huge National Security apparatus all over the place but no efficient but protective process for getting warrants issued under the Fourth Amendment.
This bill and the comprehensive surveillance plan it includes are hogwash, pure and simple hogwash.
