60-Year-Old Christian Woman Publicly Caned In Indonesia For Breaking Sharia Law
Source: Huffington Post
A 60-year-old Christian woman was caned yesterday (April 12) in Indonesias Banda Aceh provincefor breaking rules aimed at Muslims. It was the first time somebody from outside the Islamic faith was caned under the provinces harsh sharia regulations.
In the same nation where beachgoers in Bali throw back beers and frolic in bikinis, the woman was whipped nearly 30 times with a rattan cane before a crowd of hundreds, for the crime of selling alcohol. The canings are performed in public with shaming in mind. While many onlookers find the punishments hard to watch, some shout insults at the victims and hold up their cameraphones to record and share the macabre spectacle.
Until recently, sharia regulations applied only to the provinces Muslim population. But under bylaws that went into effect late last year, now members of other religions can also be punished under the rulesalthough until yesterday it wasnt clear just how far that would go.

(34,423 posts)I'm Ojibwe, and my mom, born in 1924, refused to wear sleeveless blouses or bathing suits in public because she was self-conscious of the scars on her shoulders and back. Just how did she get those, you ask? Well, it was from the oh-so-Godly nuns and priests at the Catholic school she was forced to attend after she was taken away from our family. The beatings started when she was 8. What crime did she commit to warrant that punishment? She made a mistake in class and said "thank you" in Ojibwe instead of English. So don't give me that Christianity is so much better than Islam crap. If these nut cases in the Republican party have their way, it would be just as bad.

(20,176 posts)this is the same one that thinks the FBI is lying to her when they say that Islamic terrorism isn't even in the top-5 for motivators of terrorist acts over the past 30 years based on number of acts. (In fact, it comes in behind Puerto Rican separatism and Jewish terrorism...neither of which seems to be much of a problem.) When I pointed out that the LRA in the name of Christianity has killed, kidnapped or displaced more people than Daesh and Al Qaeda combined...she send me a list of every terrorist act committed by a Muslim that she could find globally...as if that changes things like statistics or the well-researched and first-hand determinations of law enforcement and international NGOs working on these issues.
Maria thinks she's Pammy Geller, it seems, and if she continues to harp on the "The Muslims are evil." meme that it will become true.

(3,212 posts)There is no doubt which group in your pie chart commits more terrorist acts worldwide.
"International NGOs" have nothing to do with that chart.
And your chart goes from 1980 to 2014. I wonder what it would look like if it went from 2000 to 2016? Pretty different, I will imagine...

The Lord's Resistance Army is waging war in third-world countries. The people they kill are very real and just as worthy as life as any of us, but the situation in that area is very different.
And from Wiki:
"The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), also known as the Lord's Resistance Movement, is a rebel group and heterodox Christian cult which operates in northern Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.[7] Originally known as the United Holy Salvation Army and Uganda Christian Army/Movement, its stated goals include establishment of multi-party democracy,[8] ruling Uganda according to the Ten Commandments,[9] and Acholi nationalism,[10] though in practice "the LRA is not motivated by any identifiable political agenda, and its military strategy and tactics reflect this".[11] It appears to largely function as a personality cult of its leader Joseph Kony,[10] a self-declared prophet whose leadership has earned him the nickname "Africa's David Koresh".[12]
It was listed as a terrorist group by the United States [13] (but has since been removed from the list of designated active terrorist groups) and has been accused of widespread human rights violations, including murder, abduction, mutilation, child-sex slavery, and forcing children to participate in hostilities.[14][15] -

The horrible things your mother experienced had nothing to do with religion and everything to do with racism towards Native Americans and authoritarian social norms regarding corporal punishment that were nearly universal and went unquestioned until just the last few decades. Hell, corporal punishment of students is still perfectly legal in some US states.

catbyte
(34,423 posts)Maybe hateful is a little strong, but definitely hostile. Was alcohol against the law? I suspect it was, so why was she selling it? I think that Sharia Law is despicable and evil, but if it's the law, then you can't ignore it just because you're not a Muslim. I know that the rules recently changed, but until religion is abolished from government completely, this sort of atrocity is going to continue.

Singapore notoriously uses caning as a judicial punishment. It is religiously diverse, but Christians outnumber Muslims, and the largest religious group is Buddhists.
The UK only abolished judicial corporal punishment in the 1960s; the Isle of Man only in 2000, though they hadn't used it there since the 1970s.

Respectability Politics Wont Save Us: On the Death of Jonathan Ferrell
You can do everything right in America, but if youre black, racism will always pose a threat to your life.
When they went on the air this weekend, CNN anchor Don Lemon and comedy legend Bill Cosby, known not only for their day jobs but also for their unrelenting critiques of black culture, may not have been aware of the killing of Jonathan Ferrell. The 24 year-old former football player at Florida A&M University was shot and killed by Officer Randall Kerrick of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police in Charlotte, North Carolina, this past Saturday. Ferrell had been a car crash and then ran to the nearest house to find help. The woman inside answered the door, believing it to be her husband on the other side. When she realized it wasnt, she immediately closed the door, hit her panic alarm and callled 911. She reported a man attempting to break into her home. When the police arrived, Ferrell approached them, presumably still trying to get help, at which point one of the officers fired his stun gun, which was unsuccessful. Thats when Kerrick fired his weapon, hitting Ferrell multiple times, and killed him.
Having a stranger knock on your door in the early morning hours is surely frightening. And Ferrell did fit the description of a man reported to the police as attempting a burglary. But did it ever cross the mind of anybody involved that he might not have been a burglarthat he might have been an innocent bystander, needing some help?
The tragic aspect of this is, as a young black man in America, Ferrell probably knew in that moment he couldnt expect anyone to help him. He was likely very aware that knocking on a strangers door might backfire. But he took the risk anyway because he needed help. For that, he was killed.
