Raleigh visitors bureau says HB2 is affecting Wake economy

Source: News & Observer, N.C.

April 11th

RALEIGH - A report released by Wake County’s leading tourism agency on Monday says that the county has lost more than $700,000 in response to the controversial House Bill 2 – and could lose millions more.

The Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau reported that four groups have canceled plans to hold events in Wake because of HB2, which some say discriminates against the transgender community, gays and lesbians.

The International Association of Security and Investigative Regulators, Johnstone Supply, the Matria Tech Leadership Conference and the N.C. State Library Conference cited HB2 in canceling their events, which were mostly scheduled at hotels in downtown Raleigh.

I don't live ANYWHERE NEAR there but was looking at a variety of N.C. news outlets looking for the locals' opinions about their unconstitutional HB2 law.

Witness their affinity for the Republicans who screw them at every opportunity.

But now it's getting serious for the Republican establishment, they're losing money!

You'll notice companies and events pulling out of Charlotte (the place which passed the accepting law HB2 overrode and illegalized) and the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area where all the universities and urbanized areas are. Events need to start oulling out of the much more red far east and west of the state as well as the rural north, inasmuch as many events etc are held there. McCrory, at least nominally, should care about the whole state and such boycotts are surely hitting his high tax revenue areas, but as long as it's mostly the liberal enclaves getting hit then probably he and certainly the exurban/rural-dominated legislature are going to be happy rather than persuaded by pain.

It seems more likely to me that living in diverse densely populated ares, which are kind of by definition the economic powerhouses, is likely to make people more liberal and tolerant compared to living in some podunk burg where you only ever see the same few dozen largely interchangeable and homogeneous families. It's easier to understand and empathize with the other when you have actually met a few.

It is the right wingers who most often try to make the "quick buck" and have no regard for systems successful throughout history.

The only force that will move them is cash not flowing into the tills. Please don't spend any money in NC until HB-2 is repealed.

Isn't clear if that is just the main Chapel Hill campus or the entire UNC System.

Of course, there are all of the commercial losses.

They were groomed to be this kind of crazy and well paid for it by Art Pope and the Koch machine. They do exactly and Only what they are told to do regardless of potential real world consequences. This horrible law is sadly only one example of their extremism and stupidity. However, the law and the administration that passed it are both products of the Koch system of federal denial.

Their denial of global warming effects included a statute that specified there could be no legally binding estimation of tide height increases by the department of natural resources that was not based on past records exclusively. This was done to protect insurance values and property prices in the coastal resort areas, and to deny any human responsibility for global warming. The report it was based on was written by an oil industry shill working at one of their fake research institutes. The same report and the shill who wrote it have since been widely debunked for the reasons that the evidence is faked and the conclusions wildly misleading. Since we have a minority of Democrats in both houses there was no review and now no possibility of overturning the statute.

They are fools yes, but they are fooling with the future of all of NC which means 10+ million people in the 9th most populous state in the US. (Michigan, New Jersey and Virginia are smaller).

Their collective effect on NC culture and politics has yet to be measured. NC was a moderately progressive state with Democratic Governors and state legislators for most of the previous 40 years. The native culture, so to speak, is still far more progressive than the toxic crew that was elected by Art Pope's machine. It is only the degree of gerrymandering that has kept them in power thus far, along with 6 years of apparent indifference on the part of the Federal DOJ, and a MSM far happier with blaming state voters for the mess than examining the corrupt activities and relationships between Art Pope, the Koch Brothers, Duke Power, several national banks, and the current administration. Likewise, it seems, the DOJ in Washington. That sound familiar to you in Michigan, Indiana or Wisconsin, eh?

Is asking members to write and call commercial product companies to tell them they support NC's anti-gay legislation.

They will not give a carp about anything else and are intent on dragging the state back 100 years.

Karma in action, hope this is just the start of a huge recession in NC, It's what those asshole legislators deserve. just hope the people of NC are paying attention and know exactly why the economy is starting to decline and then vote these jerks out of office.
