China expresses anger at G7 statement on East, South China Seas

China's expressed anger on Tuesday after foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies said they strongly opposed provocation in the East and South China Seas, where China is locked in territorial disputes.

"We urge the G7 member states to honor their commitment of not taking sides on issues involving territorial disputes," China's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The G7 should focus on global economic governance and cooperation against the backdrop of weak economic growth rather than hyping up disputes and provoking problems, it added.

On Monday, G7 foreign ministers said after meeting in the Japanese city of Hiroshima that they opposed "any intimidating coercive or provocative unilateral actions that could alter the status quo and increase tensions" in the East and South China Seas.

In other words, supporting China's dominance of the East Sea controlling the flow of not only shipping, but also flights.

2. Exactly. They do tend to start crying when things don't go their way

But keep in mind China is beginning to get desperate for new resources since they are running out of their own resources. In other words, China is in trouble. They only have about 30% of their farmland usable for farming. Yes, only about 30%. Maybe 40. The rest of it is poisoned and not usable because of toxic dumping. When I left there in 2012, the s*** was just beginning to hit the fan economically and environmentally. But their environment was already in trouble long before I left.

Nobody is stopping them from building islands with military installations and claiming the waters around those new outposts. So, they win.

The U.N. will do nothing. China has veto power on the security council.

The Chinese had planned to head a Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, but have overplayed their hand, becoming increasingly isolated as a result. Countries that were looking to China for economic assistance are now running to the US for protection. Now all we need is one big typhoon and their bases on coral reefs will come tumbling down.

6. Yes, there seem to be three ways to handle it ...

1. Ignore it. China will own that piece of the Pacific.
2. Go to war. China would be a tougher opponent than, say, Iraq.
3. Pray for rain. Yes, maybe your theory of a typhoon blowing the bases away will work.

Anyway, this activity by China can't be very good for the coral, or the life forms that depend on the reefs.

We seem to be choosing option 1. Yeah, we sail a few navy ships through the newly-claimed waters, but this doesn't seem to affect the settlement of the area.

7. You've left out, "using diplomacy to isolate China."

China really cares about that. they want to be one of the world's Big Boys. But they're not really ready for prime time.

Yes, China is destroying complete coral reefs while the "mighty sand dollar shrinks to almost nothing at the bottom of the sea."

I have doubts that diplomacy will slow China's island-building.

I'll believe we want to isolate China when we turn their boats away from Los Angeles' port. Both China and the U.S. would suffer if China is economically isolated.

9. I might also point out that these little island bases are just sitting ducks in a shooting war.

One or two cruise missiles and they are history. They only work if they effectively scare the US into stopping air and sea patrols in the area.

But we'd be very upset if some country launched cruise missiles at them.

China's islands also work if they stop shipping, drilling, and fishing in the area by non-Chinese. US Navy patrols are just things to stare at, like sentries at the N/S Korean border.

12. The US has never used bases in the Aleytians to block international shipping.

And I might point out that the Aleutians are geographically contiguous with US soil in Alaska. China's absurd claim to the entire south China Sea bears no similarity.
