Mayor de Blasio, Hillary Clinton ripped for racist joke at Inner Circle show

Source: New York Daily News

Mayor de Blasio and Hillary Clinton are drawing some backlash for a joke invoking a racial stereotype.

In a skit at Saturday night’s Inner Circle show, Clinton joined de Blasio on stage as a surprise guest and ribbed him for his long-delayed endorsement of her presidential campaign.

“Thanks for the endorsement. Took you long enough,” she said.

“Sorry, Hillary. I was running on C.P. time,” de Blasio replied, in a reference to the phrase “colored people time,” which comes from the stereotype that black people are frequently late.

“That's not — I don't like jokes like that, Bill,” said Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Aaron Burr in the hit production and also participated in the sketch at the annual charity show put on by the New York press corps to roast the mayor.

Clinton then stepped in to complete the brief gag with an assurance that her belated supporter meant, “Cautious Politician Time. I've been there.”

When the former New York senator needled de Blasio for taking his time in endorsing her, the progressive mayor responded, “Sorry Hillary, I was running on C.P. time.” At that point, Leslie Odom Jr., an African-American actor who plays Aaron Burr in the hit musical “Hamilton,” turned to the two politicians to interject.

“I don’t like jokes like that, Bill.”

“Cautious politician time,” Clinton awkwardly offered.

“Ah! ok,” Odom, who was a part of the bit, replied.

I've heard it mostly used by Hispanics. 'Mexican Time' and 'Puerto Rican Time' were common phrases in NW Indiana. It was used by African Americans and the Slavic communities as well: Polish-Time, Croat Time, etc

I don't think it will resonate like others think it might.

My grandmother's family (all Irish) used the term Irish Time or they were late because of their 'Cork Clock' (They were all from Cork County, Ireland)

Their delivery may have been awkward, but compared to Obama almost every politician will look awkward trying to be funny. In the case of Bush, Dumbya is painful to watch, listen to - period. Same with Cruz

Who KNEW you were so concerned about clever little inside jokes, made by someone who comes from an environment where he's QUALIFIED to make them?

Is that clear enough for ya?

Absolutely unbelievable. I didn't realize there was a loophole for racism if you marry someone who is non white. I guess someone should tell Ted Danson.

I had no idea until it was pointed out, on the news of course, what it supposedly meant*. All this faux and pout-rages has got to stop. People can't constantly parse and nitpick each and every word that comes out someone's mouth and call these unknown things as white privilege or racist or some such nonsense. This is worse that denying Free Speech, it's chilling and Orwellian. Soon, no one is going to talk to anyone, which defeats the whole purpose.

Plus, all this talk about each other is turning our eyes away from the people who are doing the most damage. While we sit and argue, funding are being absconded from our Treasury and off-shored by a very privileged few.

*In my circles (pun intended), it's called Pagan Standard Time. It seems every group uses some form of it.

A very very small minority (no pun intended) of people who saw that short "skit" were offended, least of them were those who the self-righteously indignant claim should be offended.

I think the poor performance was far worse than the joke.

Does anyone REALLY believe that EITHER Clinton or BdB are racist? I hope not, because neither of them are.

Let this type of stuff go and let's PLEASE stick to the real issues.

She voted for a war that got hundreds of thousands of people killed.
She supports free trade agreements that put millions of people out of work.
She's been paid millions of dollars to speak to Wall Street banks and REFUSES to tell us what she said.
She is not absolutely 100% pro choice.
She takes money from and has routinely served the interests of the 1%.

Let's stick to this and not some idiotic joke.

Did she think it was funny?

Did she think the audience would laugh?

Did she think it would help her popularity?

Even the part where she faux-chastizes BdB for being late to endorse her is like....

"You OWE me your endorsement. KISS THE RING!"

If my friend shows up with a birthday present a month late, I say "Thanks!" and not "Where the hell have you been with this?"

I have repeatedly read up thread where this was no big deal. None at all. Why in the world should black people be offended when there was a black man on stage (as if that matters). You know, racist jokes are a-ok as long as you have black friends.

No matter how Clinton slices this joke it was racist and no amount of spinning will change that.

I've heard it put as "Thai time" or the like, "Kenyan time" to reflect third world countries more expanded or casual view of time. The people saying it were of the culture and referring to it fondly.

Whereas Americans are seen as too picky about it.

Plus deBlasio could have got it from his family and thought it was funny to make it into Cautious Politician.

The concept of CP time is an AA construct.

It's not derogatory in any sense.
