Officials: Texas student's killing on campus 'horrifying'

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A first-year University of Texas dance student whose body was found near the heart of campus was the victim of a "horrifying and incomprehensible" killing that was the first on school grounds since the bell tower mass shooting nearly 50 years ago, university officials said Thursday.
UT President Greg Fenves identified the victim as 18-year-old Haruka Weiser of Portland, Oregon, during a somber news conference, and said the "unthinkable brutality against Haruka is an attack on our entire family." Students who spoke later in the day at a vigil that drew hundreds of people on the Austin campus said the killing will leave them unsettled during their nightly walks home.
Weiser was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Sunday leaving UT's drama building. "She never made it to her dormitory that night," Assistant Austin Police Chief Troy Gay said.
Her roommates reported her missing shortly before noon the following day, and Weiser's body was discovered Tuesday in a creek near the alumni center and football stadium, an area bustling with activity day and night.

My two are also graduating this May. (Well, one technically graduated a semester early but wants to "walk" in May)
They are in urban schools, but I didn't worry too much about their safety, that is, until one was near the Boston Marathon finish line when all hell broke loose...
Anyone (particularly with daughters) in school might consider this protection I recently saw: D.A.D. tear gas/flashlight/bluetooth alert combo device "Defense Alert Device" http://www.getdefensealertdevice.com/#new-page-3

(1,142 posts)I didn't see that information in the linked story, is there more than one suspect on video or is this the same suspect who was later seen walking with the bicycle?

How about a description of the suspect?

Austin police said Friday they have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with the killing of a University of Texas freshman this week.
Haruka Weiser was an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Texas. Weiser, a first-year theater and dance student from Oregon, was found dead on campus after she was reporter missing earlier this week.
Haruka Weiser, an 18-year-old dance and theater major, was last seen alive on the Austin campus Sunday night before she was reported missing the following morning. Her body was discovered near a creek on Tuesday.
A news conference was planned for 10:30 a.m. CT / 11:30 a.m. ET.

(71 posts)It's just another woman getting violence at the hands of a man, because she's a woman and, well, lots of men like to do that. It's no big deal. I mean, it's perfectly natural. You hear about it every day and you don't bother to mention it in the breaking news.
I guarantee that all over the world at this very moment, thousands of women are getting beaten because they are female, getting treated likes slaves because they are female, getting bought and sold because they are female, getting their clitorises cut off, their bodies raped, their futures ended - all because they are female.
It happened right in your town a couple times last night, if you live in a decent size city. Check your local paper today. "Woman missing. Woman attacked. Girl found injured outside bar."
But don't bother to care. It's not like a man attacking a woman (on campus, at a party, in a club, on the street) is an actual *hate crime* or anything.
Well, okay, hmmm. It actually IS a hate crime. But it's not one of the important hate crimes. It's not one we, yknow, actually much care about.
I mean: think. If we ever took the time to put up a "breaking news" post every time there was a hate crime against a woman, the "breaking news" section would be 99.3 percent about hate crimes against women. God, that would be so dullllll.
Suggestion: Maybe - just for a week - we can put up with the dullness.
I challenge you all:
Every day this week, go to whatever your news source is. Every time you see a probable hate crime against a woman - raped, beaten, murdered, trafficked, gone missing, body discovered, locally or elsewhere in the world - come and post it on this site.
Try, for one damn week, taking male-on-female violence as seriously as you take white on black violence, or straight on gay violence, or all those, yknow, really IMPORTANT flavors of hatred.
Hey, do I sound bitter? Gosh, sorry.

(2,103 posts)A teenage runaway accused of killing a student in a brutal attack on the University of Texas campus was charged with murder on Friday.
Less than 18 months ago, Meechaiel Criner professed his determination to overcome a difficult upbringing and go on to make a positive contribution to society.
But Austin police said on Friday that they were confident the 17-year-old was responsible for the death of Haruka Weiser, a freshman dance student whose body was found at a creek that runs through the heart of the campus.
Weisers family said she had planned to take on a second, pre-med major soon and to travel to Japan this summer to see family, according to Fenves.
