Ex-staffer: Wisconsin GOP intended ID law to disenfranchise Dems

Source: Zachary Roth - msnbc.com

A day after Wisconsin’s strict voter ID law helped cause long lines at the polls and kept some would-be voters from casting a ballot at all, a former GOP staffer told MSNBC his party actively intended for it to disenfranchise Democratic voters.

Todd Allbaugh, who served as chief of staff to a Republican state senator, said in an interview Wednesday that at a closed-door caucus meeting in 2011, GOP lawmakers openly discussed how the the ID bill would hit minorities and students hardest.

“One of the senators said, ‘We need to think about the ramifications here, what this means, particularly in Milwaukee and college campuses across the state, what that could mean for us,’” said Allbaugh.

“What I’m interested in here is winning, and we need to use the opportunity ............

"...the State Democratic Party has just decided to change the interpretation of the rules by forcing all counties to allocate their delegates based on the entire congressional district's proportionality vs. the way each county voted in the presidential primary, I.e. previously delegates were allocated based on the way each county voted (see attached documentation).

For example, previously Buchanan County was to elect 10 Bernie delegates and 8 Hillary delegates to the congressional district/state convention. Now the county has been told to elect 9 Bernie and 9 Hillary delegates."
[...]
Original Allocation: Clinton-601 Sanders-629
New Allocation: Clinton - 652 Sanders - 578
[...]
if the district voted 30% Hillary and 70% Sanders, they still have to allocate according to the 49.6% Hillary vs. 49.4% Sanders of the whole state.

(from: https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/comments/4dpi4i/crisis_in_missouri_regarding_delegate_allocation/ )

Slight shift in topic:

But then follow the comments regarding what would happen if both Sanders and Trump go independent and there is a 4 way election. If no candidate tops 207 electoral votes...the House gets to decide who of the top three candidates gets to win the election.

Change has come

It just makes no sense to me that there is zero push back when these laws are being developed and passed. Don't hear much once the voters start being disenfranchised either.

Our Federal Court had to refuse the Republicans latest attempt to fuck-up our democracy. The Court said, what Republicans wanted was Unconstitutional.

Yep, Wisconsin's Voter ID Law Is All About Suppressing the Vote

Let's be clear here: it's not exactly breaking news that photo ID laws are designed not to fight voter fraud—which is all but nonexistent—but primarily to make it harder for Democratic constituencies to vote. Still, it's nice to hear it from the horse's mouth sometimes.

You wanna know why I left the Republican Party as it exists today? Here it is; this was the last straw: I was in the closed Senate Republican Caucus when the final round of multiple Voter ID bills were being discussed. A handful of the GOP Senators were giddy about the ramifications and literally singled out the prospects of suppressing minority and college voters.

Think about that for a minute....A vigorous debate on the ideas wasn't good enough. Inspiring the electorate and relying on their agenda being better to get people to vote for them wasn't good enough. No, they had to take the coward's way out and come up with a plan to suppress the vote under the guise of 'voter fraud.' The truth? There was almost none.

That's from Todd Allbaugh, former chief of staff for Wisconsin state Sen. Dale Schultz (R). TPM's Tierney Sneed gave him a call:

Once he left politics, Allbaugh opened a Madison, Wisconsin, coffee shop, where TPM reached him over the phone and he elaborated on those claims.

“It just really incensed me that they started talking about this particular bill, and one of the senators got up and said, ‘We really need to think about the ramifications on certain neighborhoods in Milwaukee and on our college campuses and what this could do for us,’” Allbaugh said.

....According to Allbaugh, at this point in the point of meeting, Schultz brought up his own concerns with the voter ID legislation. “He was immediately shot down by another senator who said, ‘What I am interested in is getting results here and using the power while we have it, because if the Democrats were in control they would do they same thing to us, so I want to use it while we have it.'”
