Michigan governor faces yet another lawsuit – this time over Detroit schools

Detroit public schools students are experiencing serious and permanent damage from Michigan governor Rick Snyders appointment of multiple emergency managers to run the district, according to an expansive federal lawsuit filed Thursday.
The lawsuit, which aims to cover more than 58,000 students, said Michigans emergency manager law allows for Snyder to appoint an unelected individual to rule by decree over the school system.
Michigans emergency manager law and related practices were used to compromise and damage the quality of education received by DPS students with lifelong consequences in the name of financial urgency, according to the 110-page complaint.
The case comes amid a tumultuous period for Snyder, who was named Wednesday in a racketeering suit over the city of Flint, Michigans two-year water crisis. An emergency manager appointed by Snyder, Darnell Early, oversaw the city of Flint from September 2013 to January 2015 as emergency manager, before becoming emergency manager for the Detroit public schools. He resigned from that role in February.

(581 posts)But the voters seems to like it or they would reject the GOP. And then we have the GOP Presidential candidates telling the voters to let the states have the power. Does America understand what this would mean. Most Republican states are taking all the power from the towns, cities and communities and letting the state have control. The state lawmakers are passing many bills taking away all power from the towns and cities. This just centralizes the power to the Republicans and the normal citizens has no voice in their communities anymore.
While there may be some merit to what you say, many people in Michigan don't really see it that way, as areas like Flint and Detroit were already a mess prior to Emergency Managers being appointed. So while the EM's may not have helped, for many of those who live outside of those cities, it's just the same song played by a different musician.
