Governor gets bill allowing denial of services to gays

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Government employees and private businesses in Mississippi could deny services to same-sex couples who want to marry under a bill passed by the House on Friday one of numerous attempts across the country to enact so-called religious protection statutes after a Supreme Court ruling that effectively legalized gay marriage.
Now, Republican Gov. Phil Bryant must decide whether to sign the bill into law.
Mississippi is among 10 states that have passed or are considering such legislation. Work on this bill started months ago, but the House vote Friday came a day after a federal judge blocked Mississippi from enforcing the last state law in the nation to ban same-sex couples from adopting children.
Bryant has often said he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, but would not say Friday whether he will sign House Bill 1523 (http://bit.ly/1Mq4DyE ).

(24,710 posts)since you set up shop in a right to work for less state that thinks that bigotry is just fine and dandy............................it was all about the bottom line right--------------------------and the U.S. Supreme Court says that corporations are people to---------------------really.
And just a reminder, today I was in store today and I needed some flour, I looked on the package to see where it came from-------------it said NC (North Carolina), I decided not to buy the flour.
Now this farmer and his plant may be really nice people----------------but I am not going to buy anything that comes from bigot state of hypocrisy, because some how the people of that state voted to hate everyone in this country with there laws, just because they think there concept of marriage is better for everyone------------------------well guess what your wrong------------------
Honk-------------------for a political revolution Bernie 2016

(31,401 posts)and as a resident of NC I'm VERY hopeful that McCrory will be a one term governor. He has been despised by the liberal, progressive community
here for some time and the moderates have seen just how hateful he is, now.
The guy was a ho-hum, moderate Mayor of Charlotte who the right wing--particularly Art Pope--and Duke Energy pushed as a 'moderate'
Republican.
NC has been a purple state--don't forget it went for Obama in 2008--but in 2010 when Dems didn't come out to vote in the mid-terms
the Republicans took over and gerrymandered the state. We have been paying the price. Big time.
I really don't think McCrory will survive this little hatefest that he and his merry band of bigots in the Legislature threw together last
week. They have seriously underestimated the blowback. It's been fierce. That, together with the pressure from Moral Mondays
and the issues of public education, health care, unemployment, tax increases on the middle class--and I really think there's a
a good chance he will not only be defeated, but defeated soundly.
Then we have to deal with a right wing Legislature unless the federal courts step up and refuse to accept the second round of gerrymandered
districts these a$$holes drew after being told to redraw them by the courts.
If there's a moral to the story, it might be that Dems need to VOTE in EVERY election. EVERY goddamn time.

(31,401 posts)Way too much of our national discourse has been poisoned by hateful language and policies," Barber said in announcing the tour. "The extremists see nothing wrong with insulting the poor, the sick, our children, immigrants, communities of color, voting rights, women, LGBTQ people, the environment and religious minorities with their language and their policies. True faith and true evangelicalism place love, justice, and compassion at the center of our public life."

(16,089 posts)...is a drop in the bucket! And I don't think getting rid of all the Republicans in the state legislature, is going to happen for many election cycles, even if the Dems come out and vote...those that can meet the voter ID laws that are in place!
