South China Sea Controversy: Indonesia To Deploy F-16 Fighter Jets To Natuna Islands
Source: International Business Times
Indonesia will deploy F-16 fighter jets to Natuna islands in the South China Sea amid growing tension in the contested region, Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu told Bloomberg Thursday. The measure is part of a military expansion on the islands that will have a renovated runway and a new port, Ryacudu added.
The move comes within two weeks of Chinese coast guard's clash with Indonesian authorities over Beijings fishing boats seized by Jakarta. The coast guard had rammed the boats to force it free from the Indonesian authorities leading to heated confrontation between the two countries.
According to Ryacudu, the Indonesian military will, or has already, deployed marines, air force special force units, an army battalion, three frigates, a new radar system and drones, at the Natuna islands, Bloomberg reported.
Natuna is a door, if the door is not guarded then thieves will come inside, Ryacudu said. There has been all this fuss because until now it has not been guarded. This is about the respect of the country.

(3,205 posts)When the shooting starts it will be China vs Indonesia, The Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and the US. China's rather modest sized blue water navy will disappear very quickly.

(3,205 posts)...they have started from a deep hole and have not had the money to modernize everything (army, navy, Air Force and strategic nuclear forces) as quickly as they'd like to. They've had to shrink the size of their military to spend the money on hardware. China is definitely a regional power, but they do not have the navy or air force to project that power much beyond their borders.
And they just do not have the capability to engage the US Navy in a full out conventional war.
Be cautious about believing what our military says about them. Our navy and air force tend to inflate China's capabilities in an effort to boost their own budgets.

(3,205 posts)...Ask the French how that Maginot Line worked out for them. Those launch sites for their anti-ship cruise missiles will be destroyed long before one of our ships got within their range.
Look, I'm not saying that the Chinese military wouldn't put up a fight, or that we wouldn't have casualties and loss of some assets. It would be a fight. What I am saying is that with the advanced weaponry and superior numbers (ships and aircraft) that we would throw at them their blue water surface navy would pretty much be non-existent within the first week, and those land based military installations on those islands would be destroyed and overran.

(41,758 posts)and the islands are close enough to mainland Chinese airfields and naval facilities to deploy attack aircraft, air cover and submarines.

Maybe they want to annex additional territory - but mostly for their own food security.
