Gunmen Carry Out Deadly Attack on Ivory Coast Beach Resort

Source: Wall Street Journal

Gunmen stormed a beach resort outside Ivory Coast’s economic capital of Abidjan on Sunday, state media reported, killing at least two people.

The attack began Sunday afternoon at the local Étoile du Sud hotel in Grand Bassam, a spit of palm tree-lined beaches about 15 miles outside Abidjan, said the government-owned broadcaster. A large deployment of troops was sent to the area, it added.

Hotels in nearby Mali and Burkina Faso have been targeted by al Qaeda-aligned groups in the past year, as terrorists have sought to force France to cut its ties with the chunk of Africa it once governed.

Ivory Coast is a former French colony that still hosts a French military base and a number of French businesses. Grand Bassam is a popular vacation spot for French expatriates, and for Ivorians who work for French companies.

By the time I turned on Democratic Underground this evening, the "original" thread was not visible.

Please try to understand that not everyone will see the "first" thread.

MowCowWhoHow III, I appreciate you posting this.

Right now, and therefore at the time you wrote, the original thread is still visible on the front page of DU, only six posts below this one.

Further, threads with last posts older (Saturday) than the original of this thread (Sunday) are still visible on the forum index page, meaning that you could have seen this thread on the forum index page too, if you had looked. So your claim is just not credible at all, on two counts.

It is my understanding that DU policy disallows duplicate threads in LBN.
