The Republican National Committee sued the U.S. State Department seeking the release of years of records and e-mails from Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, her aides and associates.
The legal assault comes nine days after the State Department released the last of the more than 52,000 pages of messages stored on the former secretary of states private e-mail server. A judge ordered those released in a separate case -- one of more than a dozen lawsuits filed in relation to Clintons e-mails and use of the private server.
Clintons actions while Secretary of State -- and the actions of those senior officials with whom she worked most closely and supervised -- are manifestly relevant to whether she is fit to lead this country, the RNC said in the first of two complaints filed in Washington federal court Wednesday under the Freedom of Information Act.
The Clinton campaign didnt immediately respond to requests for comment, while the Department of State declined to comment.

(1,196 posts)Those government records belong to we the people. Both political parties and many, many special interest groups of all political persuasions including the ACLU and the Sierra Club, routinely sue the federal governments for access to government documents. Many of these document requests or lawsuits are fishing expeditions and all are designed to further the political or environmental or whatever goals of the groups doing the suing. More power to them all. God bless the FOIA. The more transparency in government the better.
Lawsuits to demand official records that belong to the people are always a good idea because it allows for more transparency and puts pressure on politicians to be more honest and less beholden to their corporate masters.

(1,196 posts)American people are allowed to see the records themselves and can make up their own minds all is good. Both sides can spin themselves dizzy but at least the records are out in public.

(675 posts)This will be wrapped up by the convention if she reaches the required number of delegates to secure the nomination. Once she is our nominee he DOJ will make it known that Hillary will face no consequences. No way in hell President Obama lets her take the fall for this mess, it would tarnish his legacy. I'm not saying that's right but this mess is going to be wrapped up asap and hopefully soon forgotten.
The only thing standing in the way of this is James Comey the FBI director, he will be the fall guy. Look for him to be out of a job soon if he doesn't make this quickly go away. Comey is a partisan hack and a holdover from the Bush administration, it won't be hard to paint him as a right wing Clinton hater out to ruin her Presidential run. This is all classic Clinton politics, turn the spotlight back onto the investigators and portray them as a lynch mob, it's worked every time before it will work again.

Should've filed your request sooner. The RNC shouldn't get special treatment and move to the front of the queue just because you want to win an election. I imagine FOIA requests are near an all time high with the State Department at the moment.
One other thing that sticks out to me... Republicans control the legislature. It should be entirely within their power to increase transparency and oversight of the State department and increase resources devoted to responding to FOIA requests in a timely manner.
