After Wisconsin loss, Barrett supporter slaps him

Source: CBS News

After a loss in Wisconsin's gubernatorial election Tuesday night, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett took another blow - literally - when one of his own supporters slapped him.

Barrett, who was challenging incumbent Gov. Scott Walker in a closely-watched recall election, to Walker 54 percent to 45 percent. The mayor conceded the race late Tuesday night, saying that while "the state remains divided," he hopes all sides will remain engaged to serve the interests of Wisconsin families.

The polls had closed by the time he gave his concession speech, but some voters were still waiting inside the polling stations to vote due to high turnout, according to WISN's Terry Sater. One woman was angry Barrett had conceded before everyone inside the polling station had voted, and confronted him to say so.

According to Sater, she asked Barrett if she could slap him for conceding, and Barrett said he'd rather give her a hug. He leaned down, presumably for the hug, and got socked instead. WISN captured the incident on video.

*I* would like to see our Democratic candidates a little more feisty, a little more tough. And I think with the past issues of voter and election improprieties, the woman was probably feeling slighted that her candidate didn't wait for all of the votes to be cast as a measure of respect.

Yes, I understand that the margin was already wide enough that Barrett could see he was going to be the loser, but sometimes, simple actions mean a great deal.

Every single crazy person thinks they own you. The worst is that you will always have at least a few fucking super crazy nuts anytime you have a grass roots movement larger then 5 people.

And if you start your statement with "I don't condone it but...." you do condone it. There is no excuse for this type of behavior, and making an excuse for it is condoning it. We can't call for civility in politics and accept uncivil behavior by our side against our side.

I don't condone the slapping, but I do understand that people can be frustrated. These are two different things.

No, she should not have slapped him. But I can understand someone being upset at the thought that her vote was going to be viewed as meaningless by the very candidate she was taking her time to be there and vote for.

It's one thing to fuss at him because he conceded while people were still voting, but slapping him or any other person is unacceptable.

She could be charged for that. As a woman, I wonder, if a man had slapped a female politician like that, what would people say? Because she's a woman and emotions were running high, it was okay for her to put her hands on him? No.
