(10,345 posts)But it represents the midwestern industrial type electorate. Because of this, 2 things happen.
1. It shows that a state with this type of formula and demographic can prefer Bernie
AND
2. It has certainly filled a lot of sails with wind in the Bernie campaign. I mean, if we can remove an 18 point lead within a week?!? Who know what else we can do?

And the goal is winning the most delegates, not beating the polls. Its is a good win for Bernie but doesn't change the basic math of the campaign so far. Could it be an indicator of better results to come for Bernie? Possibly, but I think it is too early to tell. Let's see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

Feeling the Bern
(3,839 posts)Considering before I moved overseas I live 60 miles from the Mexican border. . .well, I would think I am more south than you.
Oh, and Arizona supported the confederacy during the Civil War as well.
My backyard? Segregation racism against native Americans and Mexicans, Mormon theocracy and Barry Goldwater.
I'll bash the south as much as I bash my home state of Arizona.
former9thward
(32,066 posts)history of your "home" state.
Arizona supported the confederacy during the Civil War as well. No, not really. Not only was Arizona not a state in the Civil War, it was not even a territory during Civil War operations in the West. What is now AZ was part of the New Mexico territory and it was very scarcely populated so your claim is BS. Lincoln only made AZ a territory after military operations in the West ended.
I currently live in Phoenix and I am unaware of "segregation" against Natives. Are you referring to the Rez? You do know, they are federal creations which the state has nothing to do with. Chicago is far more segregated than any city in AZ.
Feeling the Bern
(3,839 posts)You don't know segregation of natives? Look up Navajo long march. Look up Bosque Redondo. Look to "integration order of TUSD."
Look up Battle of Picacho Peak (spelling) and look up Arizona sentiment during Civil War.
Then leave that cultural vaccum of Maricopa County and head to the Arizona State Museum on the University of Arizona and learn something. . .maybe you should look at the Camp Grant Massacre. Then when you are done, spend your time reading the doctoral dissertations on record at the UA that dictate the exact attitudes of Arizonans during the Civil War.
While you are there, spend a little time reading the scholastic papers on segregation in Arizona. Sorry, I'll believe PhDs who do original, verifiable research over some internet poster that insults someone they know nothing about due to their haughty, aloof, overinflated opinion of their own self-worth.
Next time, learn about someone before you insult their academic and scholastic background.
You are dismissed. Class is over!
BTW, if you want to see my publications, they are at Nanjing University as I am getting my Johns Hopkins PhD there through a joint educational agreement between the two universities.

The media are all having to change their pants with the results, but the voters in Michigan said, "You know, that Sanders guy talks about stuff that happens day to day in the real world, and how much it costs, and how hard it is for some of us to get by."
Enough of them, and many new voters, and plenty of independents, and a boatload of other folks too, showed up today and voted for Bernie Sanders.

(90,061 posts)As pollsters and data analysts struggle to explain how Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) overcame a 30-point-plus deficit to defeat Hillary Clinton in the Michigan primary on Tuesday, one possible factor that has been neglected is the reverse Bradley effect the possibility that black voters were reluctant to tell pollsters they opposed Clinton.
The Bradley effect refers to the theory that white voters might lie to pollsters about supporting a black candidate, then vote against that candidate in the privacy of the voting booth. It is thought to explain Tom Bradleys surprise defeat in the 1982 race for California governor against George Deukmejian though the Deukmejian camp points to his big lead in the absentee vote as the real reason, since Bradley, L.A.s first black mayor, won on Election Day.
In Michigan, polls consistently showed Clinton with a big double-digit lead against Sanders, right up until the last week before the primary. There were no obvious controversies about remarks the candidates made in the last two debates, which were held by CNN on Sunday evening and by Fox News on Monday afternoon (though Fox grilled Clinton on her emails and on the question of abortion, which previous moderators from other networks had not).
There were no obvious clues in exit polls. One theory for the shift, posed by Carl Bialik of fivethirtyeight.com, is that Clinton voters assumed she would win and crossed over to vote against Trump. But that wave should have showed up more dramatically in the GOP vote.
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/03/09/reverse-bradley-effect-may-explain-sanders-win/
malthaussen
(17,216 posts)... although I will admit that I have come to believe that a good portion of people who respond to polls are just trolling. It might be, on a serious note, that the errors in methodology are more prevalent in heavily-urbanized areas (especially the problem concerning land-lines and wireless telephony). Perhaps the old, reliable samples are not representative of the voting populace as a whole.
Then there's turnout... apparently, Michigan's was pretty substantial.

malthaussen
(17,216 posts)How many of those votes for Bernie were stealth Republicans voting for the candidate the GOP apparently prefers to run against? That one should have legs. It would help address the turnout question, too, since the Republicans have been dominating that statistic.

(90,061 posts)---
How did the polls get it so wrong?
Michigan is an open primary, meaning that independents can vote and on either party's ballot. That makes the final composition of the electorate impossible to predict, and can make pollsters look foolish when the returns come in.
As far as Democratic Party voters go, the polls had it about right: Clinton won among self-described Democrats by a margin of 16 points (57-41), according to the exit poll.
What was unforeseen was Sander's strength among independents, who made up 28 percent of the electorate. The socialist won this cohort in a landslide, 71-28.
Sanders political revolution had been roundly pooh-poohed after his poor performances in the Deep South. We saw a taste of it on Tuesday night and not just among independents. Turnout among young voters was also stunning: More voters under 30 showed up at the polls than did voters over 65.

The notion that this is an arm of the Democratic Party doesn't hold up.
Yes, if that trend holds up, it's not good for either of the mainstream parties.
yellowcanine
(35,701 posts)To me the more likely explanation is that a lot of true independents and possibly Republicans unhappy with the choices on that side went for Bernie. There have got to be a lot of Republicans who don't want to vote for Trump or Cruz and they don't see Rubio or Kasich being able to win so they look elsewhere.

(4,558 posts)First, I want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Sanders supporters for a very stunning upset in Michigan last night! You worked your asses off to make that happen. You turned out the vote. There is much for you to be proud of. Personally, I don't impress easily when it comes to primaries traditionally... last night was impressive.
On another note though, Super Tuesday 2.0 is coming up next week.
Florida
Illinois
Missouri
North Carolina
Ohio
Big numbers.
As your candidates prospects rise.. please.. Please.. PLEASE.. PLEASE! use your momentum to start getting the Senator some of the support he will NEED if he does win to make that ambitious agenda possible!
Ref:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MZGzbSWESE8t18GGzrgc2FfL0b5tz-vmNf-F_-w5yN4/htmlview
In Florida:
*you have Alan Grayson running for Senate, a Sanders endorsement and aligned with Sanders policies. Highly recommend getting him on your radar with your turn out the vote for Bernie.
*you have Tim Canova in US house district 23. He's in a Primary against Doug Hughes. Get him some exposure and support from the Bernie Campaign.
*You have Juan Xuna in the 18th district. He's in the Primary against 2 other Democrats.
In Illinois:
*you have Marcus Lewis, running against 2 others in the Primary.
In Missouri:
* you have Cory Bush for the Senate. He needs your help in the Primary then STRONG help in the GE to knock out Roy Blunt the Republican incumbent.
North Carolina
* You have John McNeil, a progressive activist primarying against Ron Sanyal for house district 13. This one has SOO many wins for you as Ron is a Pharmaceutical executive, AND if you can get him in you have a chance of knocking out George Holding from the incumbency side. -1 R in the house +1 D in the House!!
In Ohio:
* you have Janet Garett.. teacher and ex teachers union local president.. She's being primaried with 2 other Democrat candidates in the 4th district. this is another one that CAN be a -1 R in the house and another +1D.. IF you can get her through the primary AND knockout out Jim Jordan in the GE.
*you have Keith Mundy in House district 16. No primary for him, but support this man, he CAN beat Jim Renacci (R), and that can be another +/- 1 for us!
* You have Kelli Prather.. This one is a SENATE seat, AND a chance to knock out a Republican incumbent Rob Portman! A HUGE +1/-1 in that most critical chamber of Congress!!!
By now, you are probably asking yourselves "WHY the hell is a Hillary supporter going through this trouble??"
Because it is a win/win as far as I'm concerned! That's why.
If Hillary does win, showing this kind of momentum with getting progressives in Congress, plus the escalated and unanticipated challenge from Bernie himself will go a long way to keeping her on track to push progressive causes, and prevent her from becoming a 1 term president.
If this momentum for Bernie keeps up and keeps growing, and he does manage to pull off an upset and take the Democratic Party primary, then he will NEED these and so much more to make his agenda enter the realm of feasibility (It DOES still take a congress people!) It will also help ensure he gets the endorsements in his 2nd term run.
So for me, there is no downside in pushing this list!
Really Sanders people... you have GOT to start getting the people that have to make it with Bernie if you don't want him, if he does get the primary, to be a toothless tiger of a president.. give him the teeth (Senate), and claws (House of Representatives) he will need. You like to compare this election cycle to 08'? Well, let's make sure he (or Hillary) have a congress that keeps those causes on track!!!
