Frozen canyons found on Pluto's North Pole

A new photo from NASA's New Horizons' spacecraft reveals Pluto's North Pole to be covered with frozen, colored canyons.

The widest of the canyons is approximately 45 miles, with most of the surrounding canyons around six miles wide, according to NASA. The widest part of Earth's Grand Canyon is only 18, by comparison.

NASA ascertains that these canyons are much older than the ones located elsewhere on the planet, for they seem degraded. "These canyons also appear to represent evidence for an ancient period of tectonics," said a spokesperson for NASA.

The coloring of Pluto's North Pole has also been deemed an "unusual" feature by NASA, as high elevations are yellow, which isn't concurrent with the rest of the planet.
