Ex-Marine Admits to Killing Girlfriend, Dumping Body in Jungle

Brian Brimager admitted he stabbed Yvonne Baldelli, then used a machete to dismember her before dumping her remains in the jungle.

A retired Marine has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, a Southern California woman whose remains were found on a remote island near Panama.

Brian Brimager will be imprisoned for the murder of Yvonne Baldelli after entering a guilty plea Wednesday at the San Diego federal courthouse.

Baldelli vanished five years ago when she traveled to Panama with Brimager, a retired Marine formerly based at Camp Pendleton. The couple left Dana Point, California, in September 2011 to stay on Isla Carenero, an island off the coast accessible only by boat. Baldelli was last seen at a restaurant with Brimager on Nov. 26, 2011.

Brimager admitted Wednesday he stabbed Baldelli in the back on Nov. 27, 2011, then used a machete to dismember her before dumping her remains in the jungle. He also admitted to using a computer in an effort to convince family members that Baldelli was not only still alive but had traveled to Costa Rica with another man.

Not that it'll do you any good.

It's as newsworthy as the Freddie Gray or Tamir Rice stories.

Reading the story, there appears to be no reference to how his status and station as a Marine relates to the murder of the young woman.

He doesn't seem to have been in active service at the time of the killing, he's currently retired. I can think of many relevant descriptive adjectives for him (including a lot of pejorative ones!) that might be more informative/relevant, such as his religion, his home community or state, his age, the high school he graduated from, etcetera.

Why "Ex-Marine?"

bewilderedly,
Bright

I thought some combat injuries can qualify someone for retirement, regardless of service time.

But it is true that any serious, life-changing injury, even non-combat, can result in a military retirement. I made the bold assumption that this murderer is not a disability retiree.

Extradition questions raised in Panama killing

Judge rules he can't review why Brian Brimager charged in San Diego and not in Panama

By Kristina Davis | 12:19 p.m. Aug. 22, 2015

SAN DIEGO — The former Marine accused of killing and dismembering his girlfriend on a Panamanian island tried to get his case dropped by challenging the ability of the U.S. to charge him with a crime that allegedly happened in another country.

The law — foreign murder of a U.S. national — is rarely invoked and its use must be approved at the highest levels of the U.S. Department of Justice.

The effort by Brian Brimager’s defense lawyers was in the end unsuccessful last week, but the debate provided a glimpse into how the law is used.

Brimager is accused of killing his then-girlfriend, Yvonne Baldelli, in 2011 on Isla Carenero, then embarking on an elaborate cover-up scheme that included disposing of her remains and sending fake emails to her family. He moved to the North County shortly after and married the mother of his young child.
