Former California state senator Leland Yee sentenced to five years in prison
Source: Associated Press
A federal judge sentenced former California state senator Leland Yee on Wednesday to five years in prison after he acknowledged accepting thousands of dollars in bribes and discussing helping an undercover FBI agent buy automatic weapons from the Philippines.
Prosecutors had recommended that senior district court judge Charles Breyer impose an eight-year sentence, saying that would reflect the extent of Yees crimes.
Yees attorneys had called for no more than five years and three months behind bars, saying Yee had a history of public service and his wife was ill.
The crimes that you committed have resulted in essentially an attack on democratic institutions, Breyer said during the hearing.

(18,318 posts)On edit: I noticed the news source -- viruently anti 2A -- mentioned NOTHING about his leadership role to ban and control civilian weapons. So VERY, VERY typical of the media bias on gun issues seen in MSM.
We need a lot more sentences for corruption, and there seems to be a lot of it in San Francisco city politics.

(2,895 posts)he served on the Board of Education in San Francisco. That set him apart from many others we had to deal with when TRYING to get our daughter and other students the services/support/access they needed.

This guy should get more time because he betrayed the public's trust, rather than any leniency because he was a public servant.
Maybe life in prison for any sort of corruption by someone holding a high level public position would cause them to think twice.

(2,375 posts)........while his attorney described him as remorseful. You betcha.
His AA co-conspirator was sentenced to 9 years. Who wants to bet me that the hotels of each of our criminals will have roughly similar amenities?
