Sanders 'Disappointed' With New FDA Commissioner Califf

Source: Bloomberg

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says he opposed Robert Califf’s to lead FDA because he wasn’t convinced Califf would “stand up to the greed of the pharmaceutical industry, one of the most powerful special interests in Washington.”

* U.S. prescription drug prices remain “unacceptable,” Sanders says in statement

NOTE: Senate voted 89-4 on Wednesday in favor of Califf, who was appointed deputy FDA commissioner for medical products and tobacco in Jan. 2015

U.S. Senate confirms Dr. Robert Califf to lead FDA

Source: Reuters - Wed, 24 Feb 2016 18:18 GMT

WASHINGTON, Feb 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to confirm Dr. Robert Califf as head of the Food and Drug Administration, an agency that regulates everything from food and drugs to tobacco, cosmetics and dietary supplements.

Califf, 64, a well-regarded cardiologist and researcher, takes the helm at the FDA when lawmakers are pressuring the agency to speed the approval process for drugs and medical devices and finalize a proposed rule giving it authority to regulate e-cigarettes.

The FDA is also attempting to implement sweeping new regulations to improve food safety and has begun to tackle the approval process for biosimilars, which are cheaper versions of biologic drugs.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the 21st Century Cures Act, which would require the FDA to consider more flexible forms of clinical trials. The Senate is considering a similar bill.

I have a friend who is pretty much reliant on the ACA, and she was bothered by Sanders' obstruction because she said that the FDA doesn't regulate pharma prices anyway.

and they are aware of it.

more competition keeps prices down. can't imagine callif will help with that, coming from bigpharma as he does.

Quicker approval will mean lower drug prices. Cutting taxes for high income earners will create more jobs. Executing more criminals will reduce the murder rate.

in the current system.

A 15 year old med I take had its monthly price increased from about $300 to about $700 this year.

Still they aren't charging me $100,000 a month for end of life cancer drugs as I have heard about.

I think the FDA has some clout, however that it could use.

I don't see why this appointment should affect the lady on ACA.
