Georgia state House votes to allow guns on public college campuses

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Concealed handguns would be allowed on Georgia's public college campuses under a measure that cleared the state's House of Representatives and now heads to the Senate over the objections of university leaders.
The bill, which was approved by the Republican-dominated House on Monday, would let anyone 21 or over with a concealed weapons permit take their handguns on public college campuses but not into dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses or sporting events.
"The House took a very clear position that the Second Amendment does not stop at the edge of a college campus," Speaker David Ralston, a Republican, said following passage of the bill, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
A Democratic opponent of the bill, State Representative Robert Trammell, said in a phone interview on Tuesday that he believed the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment allowed handguns to be barred from "sensitive" places such as college campuses.
"In addition to the question of public safety, a weapon in a classroom environment is antithetical to the idea and mission of post-secondary education," Trammell said.

(11,795 posts)This is from powerpoint slide with a bullet pointed list of advice for faculty members now that University of Houston students can carry concealed firearms. It reads:
"You may want to
Be careful discussing sensitive topics.
Drop certain topics from your curriculum
Not "go there" if you sense anger.
Limit student access off hours.
Go to appointment-only office hours
Only meet 'that student' in controlled circumstances"
UH has confirmed the slide's authenticity. Here's the meeting page with attachments. Download the whole powerpoint.

(1,254 posts)How many times do we read, Campus Police at Yada Yada U had to issue an emergency LOCKDOWN. Man with a gun spotted! It could be a "good guy" with a gun or a LUNATIC hoping to replicate those video games he plays locked up in a dark room for hours, days, years because the lunatic lost touch with reality. Shoot first and ask questions later. Better safe than sorry!

(10,136 posts)Campus carry is not about the students. The vast majority of the traditional students are prohibited from carrying due to the 21 age limit. That leaves only the older half of the senior class as being eligible to carry.
Campus carry is about the faculty and staff.

(1,508 posts)"The flawed argument for expanding "campus carry" laws - that "only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun" - mistakenly assumes the average licenses carrier, in this case, college students, can conduct themselves with the tactical judgement and execution we expect from highly trained law enforcement officers", Alexander Evans, an Emory University student wrote in an editorial.
The bill, which was approved by the Republican-dominated House on Monday, would let anyone 21 or over with a concealed weapons permit take their handguns on public college campuses but not into dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses or sporting events.
We really need to do something about republicans that are pushing for more gun violence in this country. Vote them out every opportunity you get, otherwise this country doesn't have a prayer.

(1,508 posts)ELLIJAY, Ga. It's legal for licensed gun owners in Georgia to pack heat in bars, schools, churches and some government buildings.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, a Republican, on Wednesday signed the state's "Safe Carry Protection Act," which critics dubbed the "guns everywhere bill," in north Georgia, on the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest and Cohutta Wilderness area.
"Our state has some of the best protections for gun owners in the United States. And today we strengthen those rights protected by our nation's most revered founding document," Deal said in signing the bill.

Here's an OP I posted five years ago, and the disinterested reader will note that not
one poster came up with an example of a CCW holder shooting up a campus:
What *empirical* evidence do you have that legal CCW weapons at colleges are harmful?

And yet, you lot still insist that Something Bad Will Happen Any Day Now.
Since that was posted the number of guns in the US climbed dramatically,
gun laws got more liberal- and violent crime rates dropped.

There is NO justification for it, not now, never was, never will be.

(29,414 posts)if this is part of their continued war on intellectualism. No, they'll never admit that they hope "liberal-elite" professors get shot, but I do suspect many are thinking that when they come up with these laws.
And since there's no "rampant intellectualism" going on inside of their statehouses, there's no need to allow guns in there
