Austria launches migrant cap despite EU anger

Source: AFP

Vienna (AFP) - Austria's new daily cap on asylum seekers entered into force Friday, in a move that the European Commission has described as "plainly incompatible" with European Union laws.

Since 8:00am (0700 GMT), a maximum of 80 migrants per day are being allowed to claim asylum in the country, police said.

In addition, Vienna is limiting the daily number of people transiting Austria to seek asylum in a neighbouring country to 3,200.

Once the quotas have been reached, "the borders will be closed," police spokesman Fritz Grundnig told AFP.

EU members would rather dump the problem on their neighbors rather than come together and work out a common EU immigration and border control policy.

of refugees. They have been very welcoming. But resources aren't unlimited. Space isn't unlimited. Eventually, the brakes need to be applied to every situation.

I spend 3 months a year in Austria - they have bent over backwards for the rush of migrants. 10s of 1000s have already been allowed to stay.

Your head banging anger aside - there is a limit what one country can provide to an incoming population with the resources available.

Why not ask Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt or Jordan why they are not helping?
