Arkansas State locked down after man with gun on campus

JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State University officials placed the campus on lockdown Sunday afternoon after reports came in of two armed men being spotted near the school's Student Union building.

Officials said after the lockdown that the incident was caused by a single suspect with a gun, who has been arrested.

CBS affiliate WREG reports the suspect was identified as Brad Bartelt, 47. No shots were fired during the incident and no one was believed to be hurt.

Police surrounded Bartelt shortly after the lockdown alert went out at about 1:30 p.m. He was taken into custody at about 2:45 p.m., according to the Jonesboro Police Department.

Arkansas State University students working on a video project sparked reports of armed men near the student union on Sunday, leading to a lockdown of about an hour at ASU's Jonesboro campus.

The university sent an emergency alert shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday saying two armed men were seen near the student union. A later message said three men wearing all black were seen.

The university lifted the lockdown about an hour later after authorities determined there was no threat. Jonesboro police said costumed actors had been reported as possible armed intruders.

"Those students have been located and talked to," Arkansas State spokesman Bill Smith told The Associated Press. "There was apparently no threat at all and no gunman."
